The Ferrari 248 F1 is a Formula One car, designed by Aldo Costa and Rory Byrne for the 2006 Formula One season.

The car is named after its 2.4 litre V8 engine. The name breaks the F200x tradition (F2001 in 2001 to F2005 in 2005) and goes back to an older naming system that brought Ferrari multiple Formula One Constructors Championship victories in the 1950's and 1960's. The 248 model was driven by seven time world champion Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa who was new to the team after having replaced countryman Rubens Barrichello who departed at the conclusion of 2005 to Honda F1.

Some notable features of the new model are the rear view mirrors, which are now mounted on the edge of the sidepods of the car rather than conventional position beside the cockpit and new sponsor decals such as Martini. The 248 F1 is also the first Ferrari since the F1 2000 not to wear the number one, denoting that the driver is world champion. This honour graced the Renault F1 R26, after Fernando Alonso won the Formula One World Drivers Championship in 2005.

[edit] 2006 season

The car has performed well this season, with an all Ferrari front row at the season opener at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Schumacher continued to score a second-place finish, with Massa further down the order. The Malaysian Grand Prix was not as successful for the team, as problems with the engine's piston rings meant that both drivers had to change their engines, Massa needing two changes, thus putting them out of the running for the win. They managed to fight back to take some points home with them. In Australia, they scored no points, with both drivers crashing out of the race. Situations improved though at San Marino where Schumacher took pole and ran away for victory from Fernando Alonso. At the European race, Schumacher managed to win again, the first time in the season the same engine won two consecutive races. The car did not perform quite as well at the Spanish Grand Prix, though, with the Renault's agile R26 managing to get a head start on Schumacher with pole position, before Alonso took the victory on Sunday, with Schumacher finishing second. Monaco proved to be another strong point of the 248 F1, with Schumacher fighting his way from the back of the grid (After he got his pole position time deleted for parking on track during qualifying) up to fifth for four points. At Silverstone the car ran strongly again, but still lost points to the Renault in the championship battle, with Schumacher finishing second from third place on the grid. The podium was yet again the same at the fly-away 2006 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, with Alonso finishing first, Michael Schumacher second, and Kimi Räikkönen third. However, at the American Grand Prix, in Indianapolis, things were about to change. The Ferrari's of Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa were dominant all weekend, resulting in the first Ferrari one-two finish since the same race 12 months beforehand. Was this to be a one off, or the beginning of a Ferrari comeback? Ferrari answered this question at the next race at Magny-Cours in France, with a second consecutive one-two in qualifying, surprising everyone who thought that Ferrari's performance in North America was a one-off. However in the race, Fernando Alonso managed to salvage second place, with Felipe Massa taking third in the other 248F1. From France the Formula One circus moved onto Germany, and Schumacher's home territory, at the Hockenheimring in Germany, although not a traditionally happy hunting ground for Ferrari, and in recent years, a strong track for the McLaren Team especially their driver Kimi Räikkönen, and he repeated his 2005 pole position in dramatic style to take pole for the 2006 Grand Prix. However in the race, it was another Ferrari benefit, with both Ferrari 248F1s overtaking Räikkönen at the first round of pit stops, and subsequently going on to control the pace of the race and win by a comfortable margin.
