Fernando Amorsolo

Fernando Amorsolo (May 20, 1892 - April 24, 1972)is one of the most important artists in the history of painting in the Philippines. Born in Paco, Manila, he earned a degree from the Lieco de Manila Art School in 1909. A critical assessment of Amorsolo's paintings can take one of two positions. In much of his work, there is clearly a love for the landscape of the Philippines and the Filipino people; Amorsolo established clear roles for such subject matter as images of a mother and child, workers in the field or engaged in other labor, or images of traditional festivals, fiestas, indigenously inspired events, and other activities that make up part of Filipino culture. In either case, the importance and influence of Amorsolo cannot be denied. His effect on contemporary Filipino art remains pervasive, whether as a direct influence or something that artists have reacted against.
