Fergana Province (Uzbek: Farg‘ona viloyati, Russian: Ферганский вилоят) is an viloyat (province) of Uzbekistan, located in the southern part of the Fergana Valley in the far east of the country. It borders the Namangan and Andijan Provinces of Uzbekistan, as well as Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. It covers an area of 6,800 sq. km. The population is estimated to be around 2,597,000, with over 71% of the population living in rural areas.
Fergana Province is divided into 15 administrative districts. The capital is the city of Fergana (pop est 214,000 inhabitants). Other major cities include Besharik, Khamza, Kokand, Kuva, Kuvasay, Margilan and Rishdan.
The climate is a typically continental climate with extreme differences between winter and summer temperatures.
Agriculture is the main economy activity of Fergana Province, primarily irrigated cotton, sericulture, horticulture, and wine. Animal husbandry concentrates on meat and milk production.
Natural resources include deposits of petroleum, ceramic clays, and construction materials.
Industry is primarily based on oil refining, fertilizer and chemical production, textile and silk weaving, light industry, clothing and ceramics. The area is also a center for the production of traditional Uzbek handicrafts, especially pottery.
