Fergal McCormack

Fergal McCormack (born 1974) is a former Irish sportsperson who played hurling with Cork in the 1990s and 2000s.

Fergal McCormack was born in Mallow, County Cork in 1974. He played hurling with his local Mallow before coming to the attention of the Cork inter-county selectors. In 1994 McCormack won a junior All-Ireland title with Cork, before quickly making it onto the senior team. However, McCormack's arrival on the scene coincided with one of the bleakest spells in Cork hurling. Between his debut and 1999 he only ended up on the winning side on just one occasion. His only senior success of note was a National Hurling League medal with Cork in May of 1998. In 1999 Cork were back at the top, having won their first Munster Championship title since 1992, with McCormack playing a key role in the half-forward line. He later claimed an All-Ireland when Cork defeated Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. In 2000 McCormack won a second consecutive Munster title, however, his side were defeated by Offaly in the All-Ireland semi-final. While McCormack's hurling career should have gone from strength to strength Cork's hurling fortunes took a remarkable downturn, culminating in a players strike in 2002. By the time the team made the breakthrough in 2003 McCormack's name had disappeared from the panel.
