Fenerbahçe Ülkerspor
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fenerbahçe Ülkerspor is the basketball section of Fenerbahçe SK, a major sports club in Istanbul, Turkey. The club was founded in its current form in 2006, when Fenerbahçe's preexisting basketball section merged with the former Gençlik Ve Spor Kulübü, better known both in Turkey and internationally by its sponsorship name of Ülkerspor (from the Ülker Food Group).
The Ülker sports club was founded in 1975; however, the basketball department was established by a takeover of the basketball team of Nasaşspor in 1993. After the end of the 2005-06 season, it was announced that Ülker would be shut down and merged with Fenerbahçe, and that all the current players would be transferred to Fenerbahçe.
In its first season, Ülkerspor played in the Turkish Basketball League final and represented Turkey at the Korac Cup. In its brief history of 12 seasons, Ülkerspor played eight league final matches; won three championship titles, including one in its final season of 2005-06; and lifted the Turkish Cup twice. The orange-green squad also won the President’s Cup five times and established itself as the country's second most successful club after crosstown rival Efes Pilsen.
Two Turkish NBA players, Mirsad Türkcan and İbrahim Kutluay, played with Ülkerspor in the 2005-06 season.
Fenerbahçe has announced plans to build a new 7,500-seat arena to be called the Hamdi Akın Sports Hall adjacent to the club's football stadium.
