A Fender is an air or foam filled bumper used in boating to keep boats from banging into docks or each other. Boats usually have mobile fenders which are placed between the boat and the dock as the boat approaches the dock.

Docks as well as other bodies to which boats may approach (such as bases of bridges, canal enteraces etc.) have permanent fenders placed to avoid being hit by boats. Usually tires are reused as fenders.
