Felix (newspaper)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Felix is the students' newspaper of Imperial College London. The paper won the UK Guardian Student Media Award in 2006 for Best Student Paper, in addition to Best Journalist (for outgoing editor Rupert Neate). The editor is a paid elected sabbatical officer, though much of the work is carried out by volunteer students. It is independent of both Imperial College London, and Imperial College Union. The newspaper has been published since 1949.
The newspaper is read by a large majority of students and many other members of the college community. The newspaper is free, published weekly during term time - typically 30+ issues per year. The publication is also available online and distributed through the vast Imperial College estate. It is an excellent location for advertising directly to almost all of Imperial College's student body.
The newspaper carries news, features, columns, letters and an array of puzzles and college sports and trip reports.
Felix is based in the West Wing of Beit Quad, Prince Consort Road in the Imperial College Union Media Centre.
Felix is a registered newspaper: ISSN 1040-0711.
H. G. Wells founded a predecessor journal to Felix called Phoenix in 1887 as a newsletter/magazine for the scientific organisations which were to merge to form Imperial. Phoenix has continued in existence as an annual arts magazine.
In 2005 Felix expanded its output by launching Imperial College's first-ever science magazine, I, Science. In the same year, the magazine went on to become the first-ever university science magazine to be shortlisted in the Guardian Student Media Awards.
The newspaper should not be confused with The Imperial College Reporter, the College staff newspaper, which was established in 1995.
