Federal Farmer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Federal Farmer was a person who wrote letters to the editor (newspapers) telling people to vote against the constitution.

A systematic criticism of the proposed Constitution and full elaboration of anti-federalist thought was provided in a series of articles published in New York in the Poughkeepsie Country Journal from November, 1787, through January, 1788, usually titled Letters from the Federal Farmer. [1] These letters are included in The Complete Anti-Federalist.

The letters were not titled, listing only the Pseudonym Federal Farmer. Most scholars believe he was actually Melancton Smith or Richard Henry Lee.
