FC Kairat Almaty (Kazakh: Қайрат-Алматы ҚТЖ; Russian: ФК Кайрат) is a Kazakh football club, playing in the capital, Almaty Central Stadium. They are, along with FC Irtysh Pavlodar and FC Astana, one of Kazakhstan's leading teams having been league champions in 1992 and 2004, as well as cup winners in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2003.
Like many clubs in the Soviet Union they went through a number of name changes in their history. They were known Dinamo Almaty when founded in 1952, before changing in 1954 to Lokomotiv Almaty, and later Urozhai Almaty and FC Almaty, before settling on Kairat. They were the leading Kazakh team during the Soviet era, the only ever to compete at the Soviet Top League, and won the Soviet First League (second tier of competition) in both 1976 and 1983. The team achieved an all time high Soviet Super League finish of 7th in 1986 and altogether spent 24 seasons in the Soviet top division, a record for a Central Asian team. During the existence of the USSR FC Kairat Almaty was a part of the Voluntary Sports Society Kairat.
Following the movement of the Football Union of Kazakhstan to UEFA, Kairat became the first Kazakh team to participate in a European club competition when they defeated Artmedia Bratislava 2-0 in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League qualifying tie (although they lost 4-3 on aggregate and were eliminated from the competition).
The club also has a highly successful Futsal team, who has been Kazakh champions in 2003-4 and 2004-5 seasons.
