Fayette County, Ohio

Fayette County is a county located in the state of Ohio, United States. As of the 2000 census, the population was 28,433. Its county seat is Washington Court House6. It was named for the Marquis de Lafayette, a Frenchman who was an officer in the American Army in the Revolution, when established on March 1, 1810.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,054 km² (407 mi²). 1,053 km² (407 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it (0.12%) is water.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 28,433 people, 11,054 households, and 7,837 families residing in the county. The population density was 27/km² (70/mi²). There were 11,904 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.60% White, 2.07% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 1.24% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 11,054 households out of which 32.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.80% were married couples living together, 11.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% were non-families. 24.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the county the population was spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 28.30% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $36,735, and the median income for a family was $43,692. Males had a median income of $31,870 versus $22,662 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,063. About 7.70% of families and 10.10% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.30% of those under age 18 and 11.30% of those age 65 or over.
