Fatal Labyrinth is the title of a role-playing video game produced by Sega of America for its own Mega Drive/Genesis system in 1991. In the single player game you start off as a young, brave, weak, and unnamed hero that has agreed to enter a forbidden labyrinth, battle various monsters and make your way up to the 30th floor where an evil dragon has stolen the holy goblet.
[edit] Game play
The game starts out in a small town where the player can speak with some of the local residents, for advice, before you venture into the labyrinth. As was the case with most role playing games the player start out with a pitiful knife as a weapon, and a low level of strength and hit points. As each level of the labyrinth is explored, typical weapons, armor, magic rings, and other items can be found and used to battle the odd assortment of monsters that randomly lurk inside the labyrinth.
Food is an important part of the game; when fed, the hero slowly regenerates health. If unfed for long periods of time, the hero becomes hungry and loses health over time. Food can be found throughout the dungeon, and overeating also has its consequences.
The game has no bosses to speak of, other than the final dragon boss. The game has 30 floors in all, with checkpoints at the tenth and twentieth floors; upon dying, the player is returned to those floors if they were reached. Upon defeating the dragon and reclaiming the goblet, the player flies back to the village and gets to speak to the various villagers who offer various praises and congratulations for the hero's efforts.
The game is, in many ways, a graphical roguelike: each floor of the dungeon is randomly generated, and enemies only move and attack in response to the player. This genre of RPG is popular in Japan and is in many ways a precursor to the Chunsoft's long standing Fushigi no Dungeon series.[citation needed]
