Fatal/Fake (フエイタル/フエイリ?)is a Doujin Versus fighting game created by Light's in 2005. The game is based off of TYPE-MOON's Fate/stay night visual novel game. Fatal/Fake has been rising in popularity among Fate/Stay Night fans since its release in 2005. It makes use of Cel-shaded animation and other pixel shader 1.1 - 2.0 effects. Because it is new, this game is constantly being updated and new things are being added. The Official Website contains all patches and information, including a demo version of the game and a promotional video. The game is only 60.2MB but adds up to almost quadruple the amount after all the patches up to v1.12 are applied.

[edit] Gameplay
[edit] Basics
There are four action buttons and four directional buttons that can make 8 different directions. The four action buttons will be told as A, B, C, and D. The four directional buttons are generally the Arrow Keys.
The eight directions that can be used are shown as numbers, and the number system is shown to the right.
[edit] Attack actions
The four action buttons are split into two groups: Attacks and Misc. There are three Attack buttons: A, B, and C. The A action button makes a very fast 'tapping' like attack. It deals almost no damage, but does stun your opponent. The C action button makes a slow, strong attack. It deals a bit of damage and sometimes has an effect such as knocking back the enemy or tripping them. The B action button is the middle ground between the two others. It is nither fast nor slow, but deals a small amount of damage.
Note that there are certain ways combos can be made. The general rule is that powerful attacks can either by made at the end of a long combo, or at the beginning of a short combo. For example, an attack of A->B->C will make a combo. However, you can also do B->C or C alone. You cannot do C->B->A. Special moves are different, however, and happen independently when used with the basic three attack buttons. After a special move is made, another, more powerful special move can be made, but never a weaker one. Note that all characters have three different sets of Attack actions. An unmoving character makes the normal A, B, or C animations. A character that is crouching (holding 2 on the directional system) makes different attack animations that generally have different effects. A character that is moving backward (Holding 4) makes horizontal attack animations that also have different effects.
[edit] Misc action button
The D button has a variety of uses. When used alone without any interference, it makes the character dash sideways ad in, trailing behind a bit of vapor. When a character is attacked while the vapor is being produced, they do not get hit and do not have

[edit] Characters
The game has 9 characters altogether, you start with 7 and can unlock 2 as of version 1.12 or higher (1.13 is the latest version)
[edit] Starting Characters
- Saber She is an agile but powerful warrior. She is probably the most balanced character in the game when it comes to speed and strength. Wind surrounds her sword which compresses and gyrates the air around Saber's blade. The circulation of wind distorts the refraction of light, inducing an illusion of ethereality.
- Archer Although a ranged warrior, Archer can hold his own in melee combat, favoring a pair of twin Chinese swords, Kanshou and Bakuya.
- Berserker He wields a colossal stone Axe-Club, and is capable of causing massive destruction with the mere backlash of his swings. He is by far the slowest, but most powerful attacker in the game.
- Rider Her weapon of choice is a pair of long iron spikes fastened to opposite ends of a single chain, which she effectively thrusts from distances. She is the quickest in the game but has limited comboability.
- Lancer His weapon is a long lance (of course) and attacks very quickly. His range is the greatest of the melee fighters. He also seems to have an advantage against the AI because it is difficult to counter attack if he attacks in quick succession.
- Caster She favors long range attacks and has the easiest combos to pull off. Though slightly able to hold her own in close combat, it is much more obvious to keep use her at a distance. Her powerful magic attacks can cause much trouble to melee fighters.
- Assassin Assassin has quick and strong attacks. Although having no ranged attacks, the range of his sword quickly makes up for it.
[edit] Hidden Characters
- Gilgamesh Unlocked after completing Arcade Mode once. Inside his 'treasury' are a myriad of Noble Phantasms collected during the peak of Uruk's civilization. Gilgamesh either throws these weapons or fires them out of his vault like rockets. Because he lacks proficiency with any of these weapons, he is only able to use them as disposable projectiles. Although, over time he has gained proficiency with a select few and constantly uses these same weapons for melee battles.
- True Assassin Unlocked after completing any 3 matches perfectly (a whole match, not just one round) in one sitting of Arcade Mode. His weapon of choice is throwing daggers. He is very profiecient with them and is more useful as a ranged fighter.
[edit] Strategy to acquire these characters
Easy way to acquire True Assassin (note: to get either Gilgamesh or True Assassin, you need version 1.12 or higher):
- 1. Start the game
- 2. Go to options
- 3. Set vital gauge and magic gauge to 10%, difficulty to its lowest level, command spells to none, rounds to 1 round matches, and short hitstop.
- 4. Enter arcade mode, and chose a character who has easy combos and/or decent attacks. Archer and Saber work excellently for this (Archer is preferred).
-
- Attack Method:
- 1. get right next to opponent
- 2. Combo them, so they die (takes about 4 hits with your c button attack)
- Attack Method:
-
-
-
- NOTE: You need to get a perfect (its quite easy to get 3 in a row with this method)
- 3. You will encounter Hassan (True Assassin) if you complete this correctly.
-
-
-
-
-
- Note: Hassan has very good combo abilities (he can quite easily knock you out with one strike in this mode if you do not get the first attack.
-
-
-
-
- This strategy works well to get Gilgamesh as well (though you do not need to get the perfects), as he wont attack you unless you make an extremely foolish move, or wait for a long time before attacking.
-
4. go to the options menu and go back to your regular settings.
[edit] Character Abilities
Each character has its own unique abilities as well as special attacks called Noble Phantasms. In the game, the Noble Phantasms are extremely powerful, but most aren't fatal. If done correctly, massive combos can be done and usually cause more damage than Noble Phantasms. Some players have been known to get combos as high as 80! Players have been known to complete instant-kill combos from the start of the game. Gilgamesh has the ability to kill an opponent in one hit by combining two noble phantasms as long as the opponent doesn't block.
Move list besides Noble Phantasms can be found here.
[edit] Command Mantras
Command mantras can be used by pressing A+D, B+D, or C+D in certain situations. They can be used 3 times, offensively or defensively.
- Defensively: Takes 2 mana. Use a Command Mantra when being combo'd to come out of stun and (generally) hit your opponent in the face and knock them away, stopping their combo. Though the animation to knock them away generally looks like it'd hurt your opponent bigtime, they take no damage. If you're getting hit by an attack from afar, you will experience a period of invisibility to damage, but your opponent does not get hit. There are some limitations to this use of a Command Mantra, i.e. you can't use one in mid-grip or when a Noble Phantasm is being used.
- Offensively: Takes no mana. Use a Command Mantra when your opponent is in mid-stunto rush forward and combo them. While comboing them, you move faster and attack faster. You attack faster at the same rate that Mad Enhancement increases Berserker's attack speed. This also includes misc abilities that some characters get, like Saber being able to air dash in mid-uppercut, Assassin's attack limiter being removed, and looping combos that aren't possible in normal attacking become allowed.
[edit] Character Skills
Some skills can only be used by certain characters. Skills are defined as a special ability that displays text on your side of the screen.
- Just Defense: Can only be used by Assassin and Berserker. To achieve, you must block right before an attack hits you. Acts as a normal block otherwise, except for being able to block normally unblockable attacks. For Assassin, getting a Just Defense will heal his HP a bit. For Berserker, he will gain extra mana. This CAN block Noble Phantasms, but it is extremely hard. This cannot block Gae Bulg (Thrust), Tsubame Gaeshi, or Avalon.
- Blocking: Archer's strongest melee ability. Tap forward right before an attack hits you. You will be able to counter attack in an instant. This is a lot more powerful then it sounds. Blocking makes you temporarily invisible to attack. You can also block unblockable attacks. This CAN block Noble Phantasms, but it is extremely hard to. This cannot block Gae Bulg (Thrust), Tsubame Gaeshi, or Avalon.
- Reversal: Can be used by any character. Come out of stun and immediately counter attack. More of a "You did it!" sort of thing other then an effect.
- Guard Cancel: Can only be used by Saber, Caster, or Gilgamesh. Cancels guard status and immediately retaliates. To achieve you must be guarding and do a certain move.
- Teck. Hit: Not really a skill, but more of a paradox-prevention. Achieved if both you and your opponent grip each other at the same time. Both of you will take no damage and be stunned.
[edit] Noble Phantasms
Activation combinations use the numpad system to the right.
- Saber - 17000 HP at 100%
- Barrier of the Wind King: There are three uses to this. The first simply blows wind that pushes your opponent away harmlessly(236+D). The second forcefully expels wind in a high-pressure gale, which hits your opponent 3 times and does about 3500 damage(This needs 1 mana to activate[236+C)) It can be blocked completely. The third re-activates the invisible sword so you can use the first two over again (This needs 1 mana to activate[236+D when sword is visible]).
When your sword is invisble, you deal more damage in multiple hits. UPDATE: Found that each 'normal' hit has a second add-on hit of 200 damage. Barely anything, but it helps.
- Excalibur:Sword that Split the Sky: Uses 4 mana. Combo is 2363214+D. Shoots out a beam of light that hits 5 times for 8098 damage. If blocked, 2-3 of the hits will be nullified, leaving the damage at around 3-5000.
- Avalon:All is a Distant Utopia: Uses 5 mana. Combo is 214214+D. Activates Avalon, and creates a barrier around Saber. If she takes any melee damage, the damage will be ignored and Saber will counter attack with a point blank Excalibur, dealing an incredible 12000 damage. If she is attacked from range, Avalon will block the attack without retaliation or change to her Block gauge. It will also block Noble Phantasms. Point-blank Noble Phantasms will be returned with an Excalibur, no matter what type of NP it is. Range attacks at close range are also returned with an attack. Jump attacks are as well.
- Archer - 17000 HP at 100%
- Rho Aias: Uses 2 mana. Combo is 2141236+D. 7 petals of light spring out from Archer's hand, providing the ultimate shield in the Fatal/Fake game. For an extra 2 mana, the shield can be prolonged another 4 seconds after the first 2. Blocks all ranged attacks (Including Noble Phantasms) and deals 1600 damage if your opponent runs into Rho Aias. Is just as fast as Avalon.
- Caladbolg II: Combo is 641236+D. Uses 2 mana. Shoots out Archer's modified Caladbolg sword (If you're on the ground it'll shoot upwards, if you're in midair it'll shoot downwards) for 3 hits and 3450 damage. Can be blocked completely.
- Unlimited Blade Works: Combo is 6321463214+D. Uses 4 mana. Also completely drains your mana gauge for slightly more time if you have any leftover mana. In this world Archer can summon blades to shoot the enemy. The UBW time gauge slowly runs down, and whenever you use anything that requires mana, it drops in chunks. If you have enough mana for the move, though, you will also lose the mana count in addition to UBW time. He can also use three Noble Phantasms that other characters use:
- Excalibur: Combo is 2363214+D Same as Saber's, but damage is weaker. Completely drains UBW time gauge.
- Gáe Bolg: Combo is 236236+D. Similar to Lancer's. It has a reach limit and deals less damage (2900 compared to Lancer's 3700). Drains about 1/7th of the time gauge. EDITORS NOTE: Easy way to make UBW very powerful - spam Gae Bolg. When your opponent is hit, leap over to their down body and Gae Bolg as they get up. Gae Bolg in UBW can hit characters in the air, unlike Lancer's. A good UBW with constant GBing can get over 15000 damage, more then even a 99-Sword Enuma Elish.
- Rule Breaker: Combo is 463214+D. Same as Caster's, but only takes away 2 mantras. Barely drains time gauge. Deals 800 damage. A tap in the stomach.
- Berserker - 19000 HP at 100%
- Mad Enhancement: Takes 2 mana. Combo is 4214+D. Berserker moves faster, attacks faster, and deals 10% more damage. You cannot block while Mad Enhancement is on. Time gauge drains really fast though. Note that you can D-dash, so it's possible to block that way. (Editor's Strategy: I've found that using B+3C+C+Jump+B+C+9+C+Grip is the best combo to use in Mad Enhancement. It does as much damage as Excalibur, depending on your timing.)
- God Hand: Takes 4 mana. Combo is 6321463214+D. Berserker cannot be stunned or knocked down, except by Noble Phantasms, and only by Tsubame Gaeshi, Rule Breaker, Zabiniya, and Gae Bolg (Stab). You also heal recoverable damage (grey bar) twice as fast. This is more powerful then it seems. Time gauge drops in chunks if Berserker takes damage. Very large chunks are taken away when Noble Phantasms hit Berserker. Time gauge is very long; the only way you will seriously run out of time is taking damage. You cannot block while God Hand is activated. Note that you can D-dash, so it's possible to block that way. New note on God Hand: Grips and Rider's Chain-toss attacks also affect you.(Editor's Strategy: Best used with Mad Enhancement.)
- Rider - 14500 HP at 100%
- Breaker Gorgon: Takes 3 mana. Combo is 641236+D. Grants Rider the ability to 'slow time' for her opponents with the eyes of Medusa. What this actually does in game terms is lengthten the opponent's hitstun by an extra 50% in addition to increasing startup and recovery delay by the same 50%. If used when linked/supercancelled from a special move, it can allow some extremely crazy combos. Far more powerful than it initially seems, but can be difficult to use effectively.
- Blood Fort Andromeda: Takes 3 mana. Combo is 214214+D. You deal 20% less damage, but you get three times more mana then normal. Also, Rider takes the recoverable damage from her opponent (grey bar) and uses it to rapidly heal herself.
- Bellerophon: Takes 4 mana. Combo is 236236+D. Rider summons Pegasus. It is similar to Excalibur but you get teleported to the other wide of your opponent. Can be blocked the same amount as Excalibur. Almost identical, really.
- Lancer - 17000 HP at 100%
- Gáe Bolg: The Spear of Impaling Barbed Death: Takes 2 mana. Combo is (Hold down 4)646+D. As long as your target is on the ground, this Noble Phantasm will deal 3700 damage. Cannot be blocked. The charge time for the move is extremely lenient, merely 1 second.
- Gáe Bolg: The Spear of Striking Death Flight:Takes 4 mana. Combo is (Hold down 1)319+D. Easily the hardest move to do in the game. As long as your target is on the ground, they will take 7-8000 damage. Deals 3 hits. Cannot be blocked. Due to the 'somersault justice' command, the usefulness of this move on its own is practically nil, however it IS very easily comboed if you mash C to execute the EX multiple spear stab (which has a predefined duration unlike mashing A or B), and simply execute the move as a supercancel while the stab is in effect. The down-back direction only needs to be charged for a single second.
- Gáe Bolg: The Spear of Striking Death Flight(Midair): Takes 3 mana. Combo is 641236+D in midair. Similar to Archer's Caladbolg II in midair. Deals less damage then the stabbing Gae Bolg and can be blocked, so it isn't that useful.
- Caster - 14500 HP at 100%
- Rule Breaker: Takes 2 mana. Combo is 463214+D. Deals 1400 unblockable damage. Also has the effect of taking away all 3 of opponent's command mantras. Useless against lower level opponents, as they can't use mantras anyway, but very effective against higher level enemies.
- Assassin - 12000 HP at 100%
- Tsubame Gaeshi: Takes 3 mana. Combo is 641236+D Depending on how far away your enemy is, it will deal 1-3 hits. If you are at point blank range, it will deal hits that deal a lot more damage. Unblockable. Damage dealt with 3 hits at point blank range is 5462, which is rather weak for a Noble Phantasm. Skilled players can continue comboing the opponent after Tsubame Gaeshi.
- Gilgamesh - 17000 HP at 100%
- Gate of Bablyon: The Treasure of the Golden King: Takes 2 mana. Combo is 214214+D. Gilgamesh's sword stock's max changes to 99 swords. You also slowly regenerate sword count. Extremely strong when paired with Enuma Elish.
- Enkidu: Takes 3 mana. Combo is 236236+D. Gilgamesh throws out his arm and chains up your opponent, and pierces them with 22 swords for 4675 damage. The chains can be blocked. Does not drain your sword count.
- Enuma Elish: Takes 4 mana. Combo is 2363214+D. The strongest Noble Phantasm in the game, damage-wise. Drains your entire sword stock and deals damage proportional to your sword count. An Enuma Elish with 50 swords does 8 hits for 9110 damage. Enuma Elish deals approximately 4000 damage plus 100 damage for each sword in your sword count.
- Hassan/True Assassin - 17000 HP at 100%
- Delusional Heartbeat (Zabaniya): Takes 3 mana. Combo is 2363214+D. Thrusts out Hassan's arm... quite a bit. As long as your enemy is on the ground when the hand hits them, they will take 7200 damage, though the game only says they take 5700. First hit deals 1500 damage. Unblockable. Is the fastest NP next to Avalon. Also has the point of having the highest "mana drain to damage" attack ratio in the game. Extremely powerful when user is proficient, it can be used in higher level games as a ranged Avalon-like counter. (Editor's Note: I use Zabaniya as a ranged Avalon, myself. Higher level, and lower level, AI Opponents enjoy using melee attacks where they're never going to hit you or dashing towards you. Use this brief show-offy oppurtunity to unload hell on them.)
[edit] Controls
The game uses 4 action buttons and 4 movement buttons. Different combinations of these buttons perform superb combos and Noble Phantasms. The combination of two movement buttons allows for diagonal movement. When on a PC, all movement is controlled via a Keyboard or a Gamepad.
[edit] Gaming Modes
- Arcade Mode The arcade mode is a tournament type system. You battle your way through each enemy until you face the 'boss', who is Gilgamesh. If you are playing Arcade mode as Gilgamesh, then the boss will be a tougher Saber. Each fight is harder than the last and you only face 6 enemies, even if you have unlocked both hidden characters to make 8 enemies. Each time it is randomly chosen who you will face, what stage, and when you will face them, with the exception of Gilgamesh/Saber being last.
- Versus Mode In versus mode you can choose to play another person, the computer, or watch a fight between two computer controlled fighters. You can choose who your enemy is and on what stage you will fight. At the end of the fight you can continue to fight with the same characters with the option of new stages or the same stage.
- Training Mode Training mode is just that, training. You can choose who you fight, how they will fight (player controlled, cpu controlled, standing still, and guard), and when the fight ends. Nobody actually dies in Training mode so you have to choose when it will end (by using the start menu). There are also extra options like choosing to have infinite mana, health regeneration, etc.
