Faro del Comercio is a monument designed by the famous Mexican architect Luis Barragan and constructed by architect Raul Ferrara. It is, along with the Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Mountain) the most recognized symbol of the city. It was built to celebrate the first 100 years of the Chamber of Commerce of Monterrey. It's located at the Macroplaza just in front of the Cathedral and the Government City headquarters. The Faro del Comercio is 69.80 meters tall and 12.33 meters wide. Its vibrant red color makes it a must-see when visiting the Gran Plaza, also called Macroplaza.

The most distinctive and famous characteristic of the monument is that at nights, it beams a rotatory green laser all over Monterrey and its Metropolitan Area. It also focuses its light at some historical points of the city such as the Monumental Flag atop of the Cerro del Obispado (Bishopric Hill) and the old State Government Palace (now headquarter of the Mexican Postal Service).

After being "out of service" for two years because of a technical issue, the green laser was repaired and recalibrated in order to be used again and make it more visible. The Chamber of Commerce and the City Government paid for the repair and re-painted the whole structure to make it look brand-new. It was reinaugurated at the 196th Independence Day Anniversary celebration on September 16, 2006.
