File and ARchive Manager is an orthodox file manager for Microsoft Windows and a clone of Norton Commander. FAR Manager makes use of Win32 consoles, and is mostly key-driven. The Manager's functionality is easily extended with plugins.

Its orthodox file manager design, combining the ease and speed of two non-graphic file panel views, with the power of a full-fledged command console, makes it a very powerful, productive, easy to learn file manager. Panels may be fully customized as to which columns are shown and in which detail and order, operations may be done to and from either panel, panels and console are active at the same time (and use different keys), and all basic and most advanced operations can be done with simple key combinations, optionally shown on screen. It is far more powerful than most modern GUI shells, as it allows for wildcard selection, macros, advanced filtering, sorting and highlighting, and of course, the command console, which, unlike Midnight Commander, it is smoothly integrated and not limited to a single line of command entry.

FAR Manager is complete with an internal viewer and editor, customizable user menus, tree views, file search, compare, key macros, integrated help, and a task switcher for its tools.

Popular plugins installed by default include FTP, Windows network, temporary panel (sandbox), process list, print manager, filename case converter, and several editor plugins to format, wrap, or alter text. There are many other plugins available from PluGRinG site.

Originally, the FAR Manager was written by Eugene Roshal, but now the development is carried on by a team named the FAR Group.

FAR Manager is distributed by RarSoft, and available as free download, the license is 40 days shareware for everyone except for citizens of former USSR countries who can use it as freeware for non-commercial use only.
