Fannysmackin' is the fourth episode in the season 7 of the popular American crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, set in Las Vegas, Nevada.
[edit] Summary
The episode opens with a Hispanic man getting off work and being attacked and beaten to death. The scene then cuts to a young woman, who appears to be a tourist, being attacked in the same way but being left alive. Gil Grissom and Catherine Willows investigate the Hispanic man who died at the beginning, who is identified as Vasco Ruiz.
After the opening credits, Grissom finds pictures of the victim's two children. The second crime scene - with the young woman - is discovered. Warrick and Nick take the case. Soon, Warrick discovers that that Grissom's scene is 5 blocks from his and Nick's, and thinks someone is on a crime spree.
In the autopsy for Ruiz, Catherine finds a woman's (or a man's?) toenail in the victim's mouth. Sara takes pictures of the young woman victim - Jessica Hershbaum - and shows the characteristic sympathy toward a woman victim. She finds a wound on her that appears to be an 'F' and the victim also tells her that the thugs who beat her up said that she was "number two for the night". A flashback is shown of the gang attacking the victim and the leader wears a pig mask.
While Catherine has found shoe treads on Ruiz's shirt, Greg walks in wearing a suit and announces that he just came from court, in his first beginning to end investigation (crime scene to court room). He helps Catherine by isolating footprints on Ruiz's pants, while saying that he had a date with the prosecuting attorney. They find 5 different shoe treads. Greg speculates that the two attacks could be hate crime since the first victim is Hispanic and the second Jewish.
The autopsy reveals that Ruiz died of multiple blunt force trauma.
A third crime scene is investigated by Greg and Sofia Curtis, this time a robbery at a liquor store, and it seems that the suspects from the previous two beatings are involved. The shop owner managed to grabbed a sweatshirt from one of the thugs and says that one of the suspect's face was deformed.
Grissom walks in on Sara testing shoe tread consistency. She states that two common treads on both victims were found and she them through "SOLEMATE" and have been identified as a pair of Doc Martins and a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars. She also found a Stiletto which relates to a female suspect with the group and corresponds with the toenail found in Ruiz's mouth.
Brass interviews the wife of Ruiz and she says that he had no enemies to speak of and was a good man. Brass passes a television on his way from speaking to Mrs Ruiz and spots a report of Jessica's attack with footage of the actual beating. He asks a "uniform" to get hold of the reporter.
On the way to continue processing the liquor store, Greg witnesses another beating. He calls for back up but thinks it will take too long for them to arrive so he drives into the alley and turns his sirens on. Most of the gang run away except one. The remaining man looks up and we see he has bright almost white, unreal blue-ish eyes. Greg stops and the guy picks up a rock and looks as though he's going to throw it at the victim, but turns to throw it at Greg, so Greg has no choice but to defend himself by hitting him with the car.
After a couple of seconds the gang return and attack Greg, pulling him out of his car. He is brutally beaten and watches the gang, in slow motion, hitting him repeatedly but being too dazed to fight back. One of them spits on him, laughing. As they walk away, Greg reaches out and scratches him. When they drive away, they hit his car.
The next scene shows a woman attempting to get around Sofia to the scene, screaming "Demetrius".
Sara shows up and Sofia tells her that Greg has been stabilized. Sara rushes up to him and he whispers "Sara" and explains that he knows her scent. He then tells her about the spit on his jacket, blood/epithelial evidence under his nails and paint transfer on his car, but she says "I came here for you, Greg".
The man that Greg saved is interviewed by Brass. He was just walking down the alley, looking for a taxi, he says. "The next thing I knew," he said, "I was on the ground being beaten all to Hell. I thought I was gonna die. Then I heard the horn and the siren." He then asked Brass if he could thank his rescuer personally.
Nick and Warrick go to the scene where Greg was being beaten. Warrick finds a strand of Greg's hair, which causes Nick much apparent anger. Some punks (one of which is portrayed by Kevin Federline) decide to down talk the running of the crime scene, which provokes Nick to punch him. Warrick calms Nick down while the punk is saying how he'll take a picture, with his phone, of police brutality. Warrick grabs his phone and starts looking through the numbers and asks how many of his drug dealers he could find.
While Grissom is visiting Greg in the hospital, Greg reveals that his mother still thinks he's a lab technician and would freak if she knew what had happened to him, because she's overprotective. Grissom tells him the victim he saved will be fine, but the guy he hit, Demetrius James is going into surgery, but they don't know if he'll be all right.
Catherine, meanwhile, is interviewing Cha Cha, a girl accused of being one of the gang. She uncovers that her purse had an F shaped piece of fake jewelry, similar to the mark on Jessica. This, mixed with overwhelming evidence, makes Cha Cha confess and tell her a girl named Tara called her on Ruiz's cell phone inviting her to a "party". The party, it turns out, was a "fannysmackin'" session, where they beat up tourists, called so because they tend to wear fannypacks. When Catherine asks why they beat up Vasco Ruiz, because he was a local man, she says it was probably just warm up.
In the front lobby, two guys attempt to convince Sofia and Brass that they had been swarmed and robbed of $10000.
Grissom looks at a map of the other swarms and the claimed new swarm, when David Hodges walks in on him, giving him the news that the scratch and spit on Greg were the same unknown male. Grissom tells him he thinks the newest swarm was a fake. The newest swarm occurred about 20 blocks away from the others. Also, the only shoeprint on this guy's shirt his own.
Sofia gets them to confess that they needed money and if it seemed like they had been beaten and robbed, they wouldn't owe money.
Meanwhile, Nick goes with a squad to Tara's house and puts her under arrest. In her car (which had paint transfer, similar to Greg's car paint) he finds Vasco Ruiz's wallet and cellphone. Back in the lab, he looks through her cell phone records and finds text messages from Pig (we assume the leader) telling them where to meet. Nick and Catherine believe that he sent it to several people at the same time, so they create a text message that he would send and one for someone to send to him, telling them where to meet.
In a parking garage, the entire gang shows up. As they start to figure out that none of them sent the message, the police show up. Pig Man turns out to be the Heckler from the street, played by Kevin Federline.
The next scene shows Greg eating in the hospital being visited and thanked by the man he saved. After that he watches Demetrius James die in the room next to his. We assume it is his brother that looks up and sees Greg and gives him a murderous look...
In the team's locker room, they talk down the murder. Catherine walks in stating that "Mr. Pig and the piglets are in the pig pen." After a discussing of choosing the wrong thing in the wrong city, Grissom states that "Our moral compass can only point us in the right direction, it can't make us go there. We live in a society that preaches 'Do whatever you want' and that includes killing someone. This city is built on the foundation that you can do whatever you want, we won't tell..."
