Fanning powder (zinc stearate) is a powder used to coat playing cards. This allows for easier control when doing fans, flourishes or XCM, see also Card manipulation. The powder is not soluble in water, making it ideal if a person's hands become moist with persperation or natural oils secreted by the skin.

Very little fanning powder is needed. There are several ways to apply fanning powder to cards. One way is to riffle the cards into a paper bag, toss 2-3 shakes of fanning powder into the bag and shake for 30 seconds. Care should be taken not to open the bag immediately, giving the powder time to settle.
