Fake news

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fake news refers to material written in the style of news, but is untrue and often satirical. Norm MacDonald was probably the first to use the term in popular culture; the phrase was part of his lead-in when hosting Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live. Since then, it has often been used to describe news satire. Jon Stewart of the Daily Show often uses the phrase "fake news" to describe what he does as well. Comedy Central has recently started to expand their fake news outlets, creating the Daily Show spin-off The Colbert Report starring former Daily Show correspondent Stephen Colbert as well as producing The Showbiz Show with David Spade, a Daily Show style look at the world of entertainment. Comedy Central has also announced that in late 2006 they will be launching another spin-off of The Daily Show starring popular Daily Show correspondent and comedian Lewis Black traveling the red states of America called The Red State Diaries.
