Faisal Hassan Falud is a member of Bahrain’s upper chamber of parliament, the Consultative Council, where he has come to prominence as a leading campaigner for human rights. A former trade unionist and member of the Democratic Bloc, Mr Falud, was appointed to parliament by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa in 2002.
In September 2006 Fulad was implicated in the Bandargate scandal, accused of receiving BD500 per month from the head of the scandal, Ahmed bin Ateyatalla Al Khalifa [1].
Mr Falud’s is an activist with the Bahrain branch of Amnesty International and a founder of the local group, the Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society. His vocal advocacy of issues such as women’s rights, the formal scrapping of the death penalty and labour rights for migrant workers has brought him into conflict with Islamists and conservative parliamentarians.
