Fairmount, New York

Fairmount is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Onondaga County, New York, United States. It takes its name from Fairmount, the 19th-century estate of engineer and politician James Geddes which was located in the area. A tavern house built in 1808 (now housing a funeral home) is the oldest extant structure in the hamlet. Fairmount had its own post office until about 1890. It has had its own fire department since 1942. The population was 10,795 at the 2000 census.

Fairmount is a western suburb of Syracuse, New York, located in the extreme southeastern corner of Town of Camillus.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.7 km² (3.4 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 10,795 people, 4,397 households, and 3,108 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,236.8/km² (3,204.9/mi²). There were 4,536 housing units at an average density of 519.7/km² (1,346.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.75% White, 1.29% African American, 0.31% Native American, 1.35% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.07% of the population.

There were 4,397 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $48,329, and the median income for a family was $56,686. Males had a median income of $39,780 versus $29,287 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $21,806. About 2.5% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.5% of those under age 18 and 4.8% of those age 65 or over.
