[edit] Purpose

The two templates ({{Commonscat2}} (and {{Commonscat2R}})) are used to tag Map Image (Category) Pages on Wikipedia with categories used by the Commons. This is part of a massive effort to tag and list all the hundreds of thousands of commons images into useful groupings aiding browsing, searching and selection. Two related templates ({{Commonscat4}} (and {{Commonscat4R}})) are used to tag parent categories and also match the 'Commons categorization system', which is actually derivative of Metawiki.

Wikimedia Commons has media related to:

They all (four) self-categorize such categories into Category:Wikipedia categories equalized with Wikimedia Commons categories AND link to the coresponding map media containing or parent (article grouping) category on the commons. This will make maps much more convienient to find across all languages, and establish a uniform categorization system in all wiki sisterprojects. When Images on Wikipedia satisfy licensing, especially {{GFDL-self}}, {{PD-old-70}} or {{PD-old}}, the images should be moved into the commons ASAP. (The original commonscat (article oriented) template is shown at right.)

[edit] Usage

'X' signifies the numeral '2' or '4' in the following...

Usage: {{CommonscatX}} (and {{CommonscatXR}}) uses {PAGENAME} as default arguement. However, a seperate (first) arguement can be given to another different 'Commons category name' using a pipetrick. The template will ignore a second subsequent (second) arguement. Thus on a page with the same category name, one merely enters {CommonscatX} (or XR) without any arguements. 'M' suffixed templates will default to a main article page named 'History of {{PAGENAME}} (of the category), and will normally need at least one arguement, usually a country, city, region or continent. (This conforms with the Metawiki project reorganizing all categorizations in all language wikis.)

On the other hand

The templates (e.g.{{CommonscatXM}} (and {{CommonscatXRM}})) are used similarly, but a second arguement indicates the main article (signified by the 'M' suffix) for the {PAGENAME} category, and it is assumed that any category name which follows any second pipe will overrides the default '{PAGENAME}' category link'.

That is arguement order is Main Article Name, Category Name (to override the default 'Pagename', which should be Very Rarely, if ever needed at all).
(e.g.{{ CommonscatXM | Wikipedia Article Title | Optional Category (default is 'Pagename') }})

Further examples of 'M suffixed templates' are not shown, but suffice it to note that this allows the template used in conjunction with one of those discussed in detail below to specify multiple categories, such as the main parent category for a map or image containing category page. Thus the M suffixed variants are listed, but not elaborated upon in the see also section following, with the same meaning for any showing as redlinks.

This template generates a text line (noted above) and, positionally, floats LEFT UNlike the unnumbered original 'commonscat'. It also has different wording and presentation emphasizing it's use for within and tying together catagories on the sisterprojects.

Wikimedia Commons has sorted media in a matching Category.

Purpose: Group and Categorize all en.wikipedia maps the same way as on the Commons.

Variation...

Use 'CommonscatXR' if placement on a category page needs right margin placement due to interaction with other text or templates.

These should NOT be used to access different category names since each autocategorizes to Category:Wikipedia categories equalized with Wikimedia Commons categories, except that it may be also be used in a deprecated category page that is not yet empty in conjunction with {{category redirect2}}, which autogenerates a note signifying that the listed category is the proper name to use. Pages containing {{category redirect}} will be eventually eliminated by a BOT. In that use event, it should be noted that the category page on the commons should also a deprecated page. (i.e. Both are deprecated or Both are NOT).

[edit] Notes on differences

The two (four counting 'M' suffixed) Commonscat4 templates are for use in parent categories that do not directly hold maps as do the Commonscat2 tagged categories.
In general, Commonscat4 tagged categories will show Commonscat2 tagged categories as a subcategory, and conversely,         Commonscat2 tagged categories will list those of the Commonscat4 parents, (and show those in the usual place).

Difference to Commonscat2R: The box in {{Commonscat2R}} (and '2RM') defaults to floating Right, Not Left, and may be more suitable for list heavy pages such as centuries pages, or category pages having other templates (e.g. Category:Middle Ages) but has same wording, which also matches the {{Commonscat4}} series.

NOTE: BOTH sets Autocategorize tagged pages with Category:WikiP equalized with Commons Cats, as do {{Commonscat4}} and {{Commonscat4R}}. Redlinks herein indicate the template has never been created (as unneeded), despite listing them in this planning and documentation.

[edit] Commonscat4 && 4R wording

In the above, NOTE the autoincluded TEXT line placed at or in the Head of Wikipedia Category pages. THIS TEXT is NOT produced by the '4' and '4R' (and '4M' & '4RM') templates, which is the first principle difference. The second is the autocategorization to Category:WikiP equalized with Commons Cats is (planned to be temporary and may be) eliminated in the 4 & 4R templates at some point when deprecated categories have been eliminated.

[edit] Related Templates

NOTE: Even numbers Autocategorize tagged pages with Category:WikiP equalized with Commons Cats, Odd numbers DO NOT.

In another variant series: 'a' is to 'M' where some article names accessed are not named 'History of ' ('M' accessed), but need a directly specified article name. The Set: {{commonscat2a}}, {{commonscat2Ra}}, {{commonscat4a}} and {{commonscat4Ra}} provide templates sans prefixed 'History of' text, with all other 'M' template similarities holding fixed.
