Mulder and Scully find themselves sent to a penitentiary in order to participate in the retrieval of two escaped convicts. Confused as to the reason for FBI involvement, they soon discover an highly contagious and deadly disease has infected many of the inmates, and possibly the two escapees as well.
The episode's title refers to the insect carrying the infection, Faciphaga emasculata, which is said to be a parasitoid.
