Fänrik (from German Fähnrich) is the lowest Swedish officer1 rank, immediately above Sergeant and just below Löjtnant.

The term officer in Sweden means personnel who have military as profession or belong to the reserve. Requirements to become officer are stated in the box on the right. However, proposals to admit personnel to the officer corps based on other merits are pending ratification.

[edit] Home Defense

Deputy platoon leaders and quarter masters in the Home Defense organization usually hold the rank.

[edit] Conscripts

  • Former conscript may be promoted to the rank after participating in volunteer training at FBU = Volunteer Leader Training.
  • Leader (KBS) conscripts prior 2006 received the rank after 15 months of successful training.

[edit] Origin

The rank literally means holder of the company flag. The flag was usually maintained by a lower ranked officer förare and handed over to the Fänrik just before the inception of a battle. His role was to align the company and the flag was an important tool to achieve that.

  • The role has changed from being the third officer of a company to a team-leader of 5-7 men and/or instructor for conscripts.
  • Prior 2006, the rank was awarded conscripts after 15 months of successful leader training as KBS students. Conscripts no longer earn the rank.
