Inflation-adjusted cost of extreme weather events worldwide

The cost of extreme weather is rising rapidly and is expected to reach 250 billion U.S. 2001 dollars per year by 2025. source data: IPCC, 2001. Some of the cost increase is due to added exposure such as building on the coast.

The best fit of 3,665 equations tried is: billions=5.687*10-55*eyear/15.52 with an adjusted R2=0.61. The next best adjusted R2 was 0.46. The 95% prediction confidence interval is shown in grey.

Please note that data from 1999 to present is not included.
