[edit] Summary
After discovering Carthage, the group decides to explore it. Yumi is forced to opt out after her continued late-night trips to Lyoko have drawn the attention of her parents.
[edit] Recap
The episode begins in the Ice Barrier Sector as Aelita is running toward a Tower. She enters it and is subsequently rematerialized via the Code: EARTH.
In the Factory, Ulrich expresses how tired he is of fighting XANA. When Aelita enters the Lab, she suggests that the group return to Carthage to find data needed for her antivirus. Jeremie disagrees with her, but everyone else convinces him to change his mind. He tells them they'll go tomorrow night. When they leave the Factory, it's already late at night. Yumi says, "Oh, it's so late! My parents must be going bananas!" She runs off toward home because she knows her parents will be furious.
Yumi arrives at her home in the quiet residential neighborhood. She stealthily opens the door and, hoping to get to her bedroom unseen, sneaks furtively through the darkened foyer. She gets no farther than the conference phone when the hall light flips on and Yumi's parents confront her from the stairs. Her father says in a stern voice, "Yumi. We need to talk."
In the kitchen, Yumi is stuffing her face with soba noodles while her parents drill her on why she is coming home so late every night. Mrs. Ishiyama tells Yumi in a worried voice that she doesn't eat enough and Mr. Ishiyama asks where Yumi was at such a late hour. Yumi responds by saying that she was studying math with Maïtena Lecuyer, another ninth grader. Mr. Ishiyama says that is curious, since when he called Maïtena's house she was studying alone. Mrs. Ishiyama calls Yumi out for lying and asks her what is wrong, saying that fibs are so unlike her daughter. Yumi says that her last report card was great, so why should her parents be on her case? She drops the noodle dish and hurries upstairs.
Mr. and Mrs. Ishiyama prepare for bed. While they sit on their futon bed, Mrs. Ishiyama says, "Takeo, I'm worried about our daughter." Mr. Ishiyama agrees and the parents decided to lay down stricter measures for Yumi.
The next morning, Yumi's parents insisted drive her to school. They park in a streetside parking space a block away from Kadic Junior High School and escort Yumi to the school gates, much to their daughter's protest. When they drop Yumi off, Sissi is outside the campus on the sidewalk, surrounded by girls. She mocks Yumi, catcalling the Japanese girl for being walked to school by her parents.
Later in the day, Yumi tells Ulrich, Odd, and Jeremie about her predicament at the Vending Shacks. As Yumi inserts her Euro coin and picks up her cola, she talks about the pickle she is in with her parents. Odd says, "Just explain them that your fighting in a virtual universe against a demonic artificial intelligence. That ought to reassure them." Yumi calls Odd a dork. Jeremie says that Yumi needs to regain her parent's trust and should stay away from Lyoko. Yumi objects, citing the evening's planned exploration of Carthage, but Jeremie says he'll give her a play-by-play update. As Yumi walks away sipping her soda, Jeremie asks Odd if he studied for next period's Marine Biology test. Odd says, "Of course I did, listen. Fish are remarkably well-adapted to water. What's more, they can swim." Odd gives his goofball grin while Jeremie says, "You're so lame."
That night, Aelita, Odd, and Ulrich are virtualized into Lyoko's Forest Sector. Jeremie materializes their Vehicles. Ulrich and Odd jump on the Overbike and Overboard, respectively. Jeremie tells Aelita that since Yumi is absent, the Overwing is for Aelita. They proceed to the edge of the sector. At the sector's edge, Jeremie types in the password:Code: SCIPIO. Immediately, the Transport Orb descends down to the Lyokons and whisks them away to the heart of Lyoko.
Meanwhile, Jeremie receives a call from Yumi, who is undressing in her bathroom's antechamber. She tells him that she is thinking of them. After she hangs up, she climbs into a hot bath and sulks.
When the three Lyokons arrive in Carthage, the three-minute countdown begins. Jeremie thinks that stopping the countdown is the key to exploring further. After running down the blue stairs, the Lyokons reach a blue room, made up of irregular blocks. Jeremie tells them that Carthage changes its topography whenever someone visits. The three start running, but they end up going around in circles. At an intersection, Aelita tells them to go left, but after she runs in, she gets shot by a Creeper. She backs out of the corridor and Odd destroys the Creeper with his Lazer Arrows. Jeremie tells Ulrich to leave a mark at every fork in the path and go left. If they already see a mark, then they should go right. The countdown is running out. They follow his advice, but it leads them to a dead-end. Jeremie detects a switch in the room the three just left. The three see the switch, but it's on the wall high above them. The timer is getting dangerously low now. Odd jumps up to touch the switch, leaping and bounding from platform to platform. He gets to the switch's altitude and reaches out for it. Mere centimeters, he is shot down by a stream of Creeper lasers and is devirtualized in midair. Before Ulrich can react, a Creeper attacks him and devirtualizes in seconds. Aelita is now alone as the Creepers close in. Then, the countdown runs out and the Creepers retreat. The room's topography reconfigues, trapping Aelita in a prison of blue blocks. Jeremie asks her how she is and Aelita says, "No more Creepers. That's an improvement." Jeremie tells Aelita that he'll revirutalize Odd and Ulrich.
In the Lab, Jeremie realizes that Odd and Ulrich haven't rematerialized. He muses that rematerialization from Carthage requires a different encryption protocol than it does from the other four sectors.
In Yumi's house, everyone is doing their own thing. Mrs. Ishiyama is knitting while a new character, Hiroki, makes an appearance. He is Yumi's little brother and is busy playing Tetrix (the remake of Tetris) on his Game Boy Advance SP with the volume at full blast. Yumi sarcastically asks Hiroki if he can play the game any louder. Hiroki says, "Sorry Yumi, but the volume's already at max." Mrs. Ishiyama shoos her son into another room. Yumi and her father are playing Go, a Japanese board game. Yumi gets a message on her phone. Her father passes his turn and so does Yumi, so the game is finished. Mr. Ishiyama says he won since he has five more points, but Yumi is actually the victor. She invokes the Go rule that White beads give the player extra points. Defeated, her father dismisses her. Yumi goes into the hallway and calls Jeremie back. Jeremie tells her to get to the Factory as soon as possible.
In Carthage, a passageway in the blocks suddenly open and in floats the Scyphozoa, the memory-stealing jellyfish monster. It is approaching Aelita's position as the AI backs up against a wall.
At Yumi's house, Mrs. Ishiyama goes into her daughter's room, only to see an open window and a doll under her bed sheets. Immediately, her parents drive to the Junior High School. On the sidewalk in front of the main gate, the Ishiyamas meet Headmaster Delmas and Jim to see if they know where Yumi went. Jim and Headmaster Delmas recommend that they interrogate Jeremie, Ulrich and Odd, since they always hang out with Yumi.
Yumi enters Lyoko's Mountain Sector where she cruises over the peaks and ridges on the Overwing. Jeremie warns Yumi that XANA will do anything to prevent her from taking the Transport Orb. As Yumi approaches the edge of the sector, her Vehicle is shot down by Kankrelats. She runs to the edge under heavy fire and Jeremie summons the Transport Orb, which takes Yumi to Carthage.
In the Dormitory Building, Jim, the Ishiyamas and Headmaster Delmas note that no one is in Jeremie's room, nor in Ulrich and Odd's. Sissi happens to be walking by, and Headmaster Delmas asks his daughter if she knows where the gang went. Sissi says she doesn't, but their "mascot" does. Showing the confused adults what she means, Sissi goes into Ulrich and Odd's room and wakes up Kiwi. Jim comments that there is a "flea-ridden mutt" in the school while Sissi makes Kiwi smell one of Odd's dirty socks. When Kiwi catches the scent, he leads the adults to the manhole cover in the Park. Jim opens it and smells the dank sewer air. He says, "Gah. This reminds me of when I used to work in the Sewers!" As Jim climbs down, Headmaster Delmas asks, "You, you used to work in the Sewers, Jim." Jim responds with, "I'd...I'd rather not talk about it."
As the Scyphozoa gets closer to Aelita, Yumi encounters a network of security lasers in one of the sloping corridors. As she tries to get through the obstacles, she touches one of the trip wires and loses life points. Jeremie warns Yumi of the dangers and tells her that this is no time to rush, despite the countdown. Yumi carefully ducks and dips under the trip wires. Meanwhile, the Scyhpozoa levitates Aelita and begins boring into her memory. Back at the security maze, Yumi gets tired of ducking and weaving and backflips through the last set of laser trip wires. The countdown gets extremely low. With the obstacles behind her, Yumi bounds to the end of the corridor and, with two seconds to spare, deactivates the switch, which was conveniently reconfigured. The countdown stops and, in addition, a wall separates Aelita and the Scyphozoa and a pathway opens up for Yumi.
In the city's Sewers, Jim is forced into a game of tug-of-war with Kiwi after Odd's dog decides to chew on Jim's slipper. Jim curses at Kiwi and the dog lets go. Jim's bunny slipper flies into the sewer channel and sinks out of view in the murky sludge.
Yumi follows the path to a continuous-operation elevator that zips past her and continues around its spherical shaft. When it comes around again, Yumi jumps aboard and rides the elevator. She is clearly enjoying herself at this time. As the elevator zooms past a doorway, Aelita calls to Yumi. Before the Japanese girl can react, the elevator leaves Aelita behind and Yumi must wait until it comes around again to pick up Aelita. The two girls enjoy themselves as the elevator zips around and then ascends a vertical shaft. It lets Yumi and Aelita off at the Celestial Dome, a small platform on the exterior of the massive blue sphere that is Carthage. Aelita notices an Interface at the platform's edge and activates it. She begins sorting through a number of data readings and popup information windows. Thrilled by the revelations she receives, Aelita talks quickly, stating that the data stored in Carthage Interface is actually that of the Supercomputer and that Carthage is XANA's home sector. Aelita quickly sends Jeremie the Carthage rematerialization codes (for Ulrich and Odd) when Yumi notices something strange. Surrounding Carthage is a massive data stream consisting of thousands of screens displaying binary code. Three holes appear in the data stream itself and a trio of giant, manta-like monsters emerge.
The adults have now arrived at the Factory and step onto the upper gallery catwalk of the barren Cathedral Hall. Headmaster Delmas stares at the dark, empty steel complex and wonders aloud why anyone would hang out here.
Jeremie materializes the Overwing and Yumi drives while Aelita hops on the back. After some fast-paced flying maneuvers and laser-dodging, Aelita realizes that there is no escape except for through the four massive data tunnels that connect Carthage with Lyoko's four other sectors. Jeremie opens one of the tunnels when Yumi gets shot off the Overwing by one of the Mantas' lasers. As Yumi tumbles into the data stream, Aelita takes control of the Overwing and drives it into the Mountain Sector. Aelita dashes to a neutral Tower and is materialized through Code: EARTH.
With the materialization codes for Carthage, Jeremie materializes Odd, Yumi, and Ulrich. Jeremie runs to the Scanner room where Ulrich and Odd stumble out of the Scanners. Jeremie catches Odd and yells, "Odd! Say something!" Odd replies weakly, "Something." When the group fully recovers, they take Aelita back up to the Factory Floor via the elevator. When the door opens at the top, Kiwi sticks his nose in and jumps into the arms of his surprised master. The group flinches when they see Headmaster Delmas, Jim and the Ishiyamas waiting for them, all demanding explanations. Without warning, Ulrich, Odd, Aelita and Yumi take off in different directions as a distraction. Jeremie pushes the button to take him back down to the Lab. Unfortunately, Jim ducks into the elevator while Headmaster Delmas and the Ishiyamas chase after the kids. Jim asks if Jeremie thought he could outsmart him and tries to nab the dodging boy. However, when the elevator reaches the Lab Jim is promptly shut up in his awe for all the out of place technology. He asks what is going on and Jeremie says, "What? You don't remember? You've been here before." While Jim just stands dumbfounded, Jeremie presses the Enter key and says, "Return to the Past, Now." The white bubble expands out from the holosphere, englufing Jim, the people on the Factory Floor and the entire Universe, sending it all back to that morning.
The Ishiyamas have just emerged from their car and Mr. Ishiyama sternly asks Yumi why she always comes home so late. Yumi blushes and says that it is because she is in love. Her parents suddenly become pleased and tell their daughter that they thought something was up, but approve of her mysterious relationship. They leaves smiling. Yumi walks to the front gate and sticks her tongue out at Sissi before the latter of the two girls can insult Yumi and her parents. Sissi flinches and looks startled at Yumi. Inside the school grounds, Ulrich asks Yumi what she told her parents. Yumi simply says, "The truth." This confuses Ulrich as Yumi stares at him.
