Exaggeration

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Exaggeration is the process of making something bigger than it is, or claiming that it is larger than it is. Done unintentionally or as a figure of speech, it is called "hyperbole".

An example of exaggeration would be if a dozen members of an audience of 100 people walked out on a comedian whose act was going badly, but a news account described it as "the majority of the audience members got up and left". [1] The reason this would be an exaggeration is because "the majority" literally means "50 percent or more" so 12 percent is less than the majority.
