The Ewald construction for a wave of wavevector q incident on a two-dimensional square lattice. The lattice points of the dual lattice (also known as reciprocal or momentum space) are indicated by the black dots. When looking at the intensity of refracted light from the crystal, the major contribution will be that due to waves of wavevector K, which lies on the Ewald sphere (circle in 2 dimensions).
