Evolution is a web-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG.) Evolution was created by Neondragon (Neon) after the game that he was playing (Planetarion) decided to start charging money to play each round. Neon didn't create Evolution to rival Planetarion, but just as something to do in his free time to stop himself being bored. The game of Evolution was started around May 2001.

[edit] Game description

Evolution uses a tick based system where each tick is 1 hour long. On each tick the player receives resources (metal, mineral and food) which the player spends on Research and Development (R&D) as well as buying land for extra resources and creating creatures and other useable items.

[edit] History and development

It came about a few years ago, when Neon was 15 years old. He hadn't used MySQL/PHP before and so making Evolution 1 was also a learning experience, Neon was teaching himself how to make the game at the same time as making it. It took about two weeks to make a working (but basic) Evolution 1.

Over the last few years the game has evolved. The game of Evolution was started around May 2001.

[edit] Evolution 1

The first few rounds were very small, but he found it was very fun to see people enjoying his creation. The lessons learnt were not to trust anyone. Due to the fact he was still learning MySQL/PHP, there were a load of mistakes in how he had made the game, which allowed people to for instance give themselves as much land as they wanted... obviously not brilliant.

[edit] Evolution 2

This round started 8th August 2002 After a successful 1st round, neonDragon decided to keep his new toy (Evolution) running.

Around 50 - 100 people were playing, including Neon and moose. Almost all players were brought to Evolution by friends, so the community was very tight. Competitivness was only as far as rank, everyone was everyone's friend.

[edit] Evolution 3

Evolution 3 was the beginning of its growth. No tool bars, scrips nor math calculations were used during this round or before, everything was done by experience.

Evolution 3 had a very basic forum called "Consortium" where players could talk to other people on their forum. There was no proper alliance system and all alliances were unofficial.

[edit] Evolution 4

This round introduced various new features:

  • World Forums
  • Auctions
  • Two new archeaology paths
  • Alliance System (Introduced half way into round)

Most alliances totalled 10 players each, however big alliance's were considered ones having 20 or so people.

It also gave birth to a few extra mini rounds, so rounds such as 4.Extreme existed as well. (See below)

[edit] Evolution 4: Extreme

This round was based on the Evolution 4 codebase with a few extra features.

[edit] Evolution 4: Shift of the Ages (SOTA)

[edit] Evoultion 5

The current round in Evolution is round 5.5. Round 5.4 ended at midnight on Tuesday 18th July 2006. Round 5.5 began at midday on Wednesday 19th July 2006.
