[edit] Introductory Sentence

This intro sentence is meaningless - "favours the EU" ? in what ? What are the "aims of the EU" ? Not being a Europeanist myself - can someone please amend ? I am only looking for terms that have real meaning. Thanks--jrleighton 11:36, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

The sentence makes sense to me but I will think about how to make it clearer. The aims of the [European Union] are, paraphrased from one of the drafts of the EU constitution, to:
  • uphold democracy and fundamental rights
  • promote sustainable economic and social progress
  • live together in freedom, justice and peace
  • advance our common (European) interests in the world
  • create an ever closer Union among the peoples of Europe
