[edit] Merge
I propose that this portal be integrated into portal Europe and redirected there. It is silly to have two portals like this. Instead we should concentrate our efforts on one portal. -MarSch 12:35, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
What's wrong with two portals ? Parmaestro 12:45, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
- A portal is not very usefull if it is only created. You need to run it and for that you need some participants. By running I mean that the featured article gets changed after a vote on some candidates and that there is a collaboration of the week/month/fortnight that actually attracts some attention and so on. Basically some editor activity going on.
- The EU is just one aspect of politics in Europe, it seems rather narrow to me, and if you want it to mean more than it means Europe so it might create some confusion also. What is wrong with one portal?-MarSch 15:30, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
-
- I think that it may be a problem of people not knowing about this portal. The EU doesn't seem all that narrow to me and I'm very interested in the possibilities of this portal. There are already separate portals for the UK and Polond which are even narrower. Do you want to consolidate those portals as well ? Parmaestro 18:52, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
-
-
- I don't think it's too narrow or small a topic to cover with a portal. I think we should give it a go! -- Joolz 15:41, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

what is the sense of the featured article? why should paris have precedence before other cities e.g. london or berlin? beside that, most information are just wrong. for example: paris doesn't have 11 million citizens, just ~2.2 officialy .. i strongly recommend to give the users the possibility to open that article for corrections
- The article is open for corrections, if there any to make! I'm not sure why Paris is listed as a featured article here (it's not "featured" as in Wikipedia:Featured articles by the way), the population figure is not for Paris but the greater metropolitan area, if you have a suggestion for a really good article about the EU which we can list in it's place, we're open to ideas -- Joolz 11:57, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
This should not be merged. The EU is purely political; Europe still retains cultural aspects. -Sparky
[edit] Merging with the "Europe" Portal.
I do not agree with the proposed merge, as the European Union, is different from Europe.
Arguably, yes, the EU is part of Europe, however, the subject is broad enough to dedicate a seperate Portal to it and it's various institutions. With that said, the subject is also concentrated enough to be able to discuss it pointedly.
So I hold that the proposed merger of the EU portal and the Europe Portal be cancelled.

- My concern is that it is not clear, when seeing that there are portals on Europe and the EU, what each offers that is unique and distinct from the other. Brussels, currently featured here, is not and EU-specific topic. I fear there must be considerable duplication of effort, and it would be better to have one Europe portal than two. Worldtraveller 08:49, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
-
- I agree we should have one. That being said, however, i must admit i see more merit in an EU portal than in a Europe portal. I feel Europe is much too broad a concept, and in practice you can see most of the items on the Europe portal are EU related. To be honest, i dont see much point in a Europe (not-EU) portal. --The Minister of War 09:53, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- The two portals could be distinctly different if correctly administered. My opinion is that the Europe portal should focus on geographical issues that includes Norway, Kazakhstan, and other countries that currently are not part of the EU - whereas the EU portal should focus on the European institution (and not on the geography of the member states). In conclusion, both portals should remain independent and aware of what they provide as to avoid too much overlap. --Drdan 16:31, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
-
- I have to say, I agree with Drdan. Lets work on the EU portal and administer it better and make sure that it is distinct from the Europe portal. I say we give this a trial period, and then if there is still a consensus to merge, then we'll merge.--Aaron Muchelle October 14th, 2005. 2013 (UTC)
Oppose. the European Union is a political entity. Europe is a geographical and cultural entity. --Red King 13:31, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Oppose per Drdan and Red King --LiniShu 01:31, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
No way like most people have said, they are different. The EU is a political... (it's just so many different types... what word to use?) ...thing, Europe is a geographical thing, not mention not all of Europe is in the EU - RedHotHeat 22:06, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

- With respect I feel many of you are missing my point. Of course I am not saying they are the same thing. What I am saying is that they have substantial overlap, creating duplication of effort, and the existence of two Europe portals is confusing for readers browsing the portal list. Is this portal for readers or editors? Worldtraveller 20:09, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

- It shouldn't really be a problem if the EU Portal stays out of national politics and the Europe portal stays out of supra-national politics. It's called subsidiarity. Perhaps each needs an intro to that effect? --Red King 18:06, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Oppose As has been mentioned by so many, the EU is political, while Europe actually has a history and a number of cultures. The EU does not include Europe, so if you do anything, get rid of one portal or another. You can't call Europe EU and you can't call the EU Europe. -Brian
Oppose Europe is 50+ countries, the EU is 25. They are not the same. Furthermore, the EU is political, while 'Europe' is an ideal/continent/mindset/whatever, but it is not political--LeftyG 07:30, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- To repeat what I said above: "Of course I am not saying they are the same thing. What I am saying is that they have substantial overlap, creating duplication of effort, and the existence of two Europe portals is confusing for readers browsing the portal list". Worldtraveller 17:29, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
"I oppose this proposed merge because, as has been mentioned numerous times, Europe is a geographical entity (a continent, a landmass, whatever you want to call it), while the EU is an international organization made up of most (but not all) of European states. Not to mention that there is considerable debate over what is considered part of Europe (i.e., Turkey? Russia?). Also, the history of the EU is much different from that of Europe: The history of Europe dates back centuries. The history of the EU dates back to the formation of the European Coal and School Community (ECSC) in late 1940s/early 1950s. The EU and Europe are completely different things. While it is possible that the EU might someday completely erode the sovereignty of European states, that has not yet occurred. Europe does not equal the European Union. I am currently taking a college class that focuses on international organizations; that's where I've learned all this stuff (IA 211 at Lewis & Clark College). [edit] Don't do this just for respect for the outsiders
Please never do that just for respect for those that are not (yet) in the EU. I personally hate when I hear people saying Europe with the meaning of the EU. These people forget about the outsiders. I have this little complex here in Brussels every day since I am not in the EU. Mihály Elekes 26 October 2005.
[edit] Open Europe
The article Open Europe reads like a party political broadcast. Is there a suitable tag? {{NPOV}} doesn't seem to fit. --Red King 22:56, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Updating
I've taken the liberty of starting to update the portal, hope ya'll don't mind. Over the next few days I'll be adding content, archives, suggestion areas, and populating lists. This should be a major and well laid out portal, not the shape it was in. I'm not a European, so anything I get wrong, let me know. You can see my other portals, as well. Thnx :) Joe I 16:56, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Suggestions
I'm in serious need of suggestions for Selected article and Selected picture. If you have any idea of an article/picture that is remotely semi-good, please post a link on the appropiate page. Thnx :) Joe I 10:17, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Green pound
We don't have an article for the green pound that existed for purposes of equalisation and stability before the advent of the euro. Presumably there was a green mark, a green franc and a green lira etc too. Does anybody know enough about it to write one? --Red King 20:07, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- You might wanna try asking on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Numismatics or Euro. Thnx :) Joe I 11:13, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Montenegro
The map of Europe and E.U. memberstates on the portal still shows a defunct Serbia & Montenegro. I can add Montenegro, but, is there a way to modify the current image without having to upload a brand new one?--Húsönd 13:20, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
- Negative, all uploads are final, no editing. have to download, fix, then reupload, I guess with another name. Joe I 19:50, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Europatriotism
I'd like to call attention to the article Europatriotism. An editor (Paul111) has recently made substantial changes and move the article to Pan-European identity without prior discussion. The article is now a list of very negative comments about European identity and pan-European projects. I think that this issue should be discussed and I hope some of the users interested in European topics will join it. Dumbledore 18:21, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] DYK section
There's an empty space on the lower right of the portal. I would like to suggest the inclusion of a Did You Know section there. Any objections? --Húsönd 02:22, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
