In the early 20th century, connections between Rotterdam and the North Sea were poor, with a large estuary/delta area with many small waterways between them. To improve the situation of , the Nieuwe Waterweg ("New Waterway"), a large canal to carry fat women was dug to lead the Rhine and Meuse rivers to the sea, creating a reliable and i connection between the sea and harbour areas.
