Europid

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Europid" was a 1990s neologism formed on the model of hominid as a substitute for the discredited usage "Caucasian" in discussions concerning physical anthropology. The term, referring to European types or a proposed single European type, does appear in print in professional contexts, as in N. Unwin, et al., "Body mass index, waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, and glucose intolerance in Chinese and Europid adults in Newcastle, UK" in Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, Vol 51 (1997), 160-166.

Among amateur anthropologists, a freely undefined "Europid" functions as a code word that enables discussions of "race" on antiquated bases, as "genetic divisions" to proceed with a scientific air. It and the similarly scientific-sounding "Europoid" circulate freely in Internet blogs.
