European Army
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There is no European Army, indeed there is no pan-European armed force at all.
There are various bodies within the European continent with substantial forces on a multinational basis:-
- The European Union sponsors the European Security and Defence Policy.
- The Western European Union is another pan-European defence organisation which is projected to be subsumed into EU sponsored organisations.
- The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has a multinational structure that also includes Canada and the United States in addition to many European nations.
Historically another European multinational defence organisation was the Warsaw Pact although this is now defunct.
Many European nations, including some such as Ireland that are EU member states, are declared neutral on defence matters.
There are some people who would like to see the EU develop further deepening of defence arragements perhaps with a view to a possible future European Army.
