Eton Hall
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eton Hall is the formal assembly hall of St. Margaret’s Anglican Girl’s School, Brisbane, Australia. The Hall is small in volume, both physically and perceptually, with wooden floors housing all activities from traditional ceremonies and assemblies through to musicals and hip hop dance classes. The Hall is situated below the school boarding house.
The school was founded in 1895 by the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent to reflect their philosophies, with Eton Hall taking its name from the former boy’s school, Eton High School, in which the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent opened a boarding facility in 1895. After relocating to Toorak House in 1907, and three years later to Albion Heights, the school in 1939 established a fund to commence the building of an assembly hall large enough to accommodate the expanding school population. However, due to World War II, enrollment declined. Yet via such fund raisers as flower stalls the Hall was built in 1949, complete with a sanctuary extension (www.stmarg.qld.edu.au). This communal spirit translates today through the display of student crafted tapestries, and dark wooden, turned skirting boards which convey respected convention whilst assimilating feminine flair. Presently, 700 secondary students a year attend events in the Hall, and 185 boarders use this place as an annex to their extended home.
