[edit] Pre-Show

Ethan Winthrop is the only child of Sam Bennett and Ivy Winthrop. His mother was deeply in love with his father, but Ethan's grandfather, former governor Harrison Winthrop, saw to it that the young lovers stay separated. Ivy and Sam discovered her father's treachery on Ivy's wedding night to Julian Crane, and the two made love, resulting in Ethan's conception. When Ivy learned she would have nothing if she went to Sam she chose to stay with Julian, and instead decided to pass off her son as a Crane.

As Ethan Crane, Ethan lived a life of luxury and power. As Julian's firstborn son, Ethan was bred to be the heir to the Crane empire. This, coupled with his mother's favoritism of Ethan over her other three children with Julian, caused Ethan's siblings to deeply resent him, especially his brother, Fox.

At the age of twelve, Ethan met Gwen Hotchkiss at a joint mixer for both of their schools. The two became fast friends, and soon started dating. The two then went on to attend Choate Rosemary Hall boarding school.

Once out of high school, Ethan went on to attend an unknown undergraduate school and then Harvard Law School.

[edit] 1999

After graduating from HLS in 1999, Ethan, now twenty-four, decided to move back to his hometown of Harmony with Gwen. He took a job as the lawyer for Gwen's parents, spent some time in private practice, and then went to work for Crane Industries. He and Gwen left and later returned to Harmony that summer of 1999.

Ethan has always been in love with Gwen, but he was reluctant to finalize their relationship, until his aunt Sheridan pushed him into it. Knowing that he was proposing for other reasons, Gwen turned him down -- if she couldn't marry for love, she wouldn't marry him. That issue was pushed to the back-burner when Ethan began being the victim of mysterious 'accidents', and became determined to learn who was stalking him. With the help of private detective Frank Lomax, he eventually realized that Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald was his stalker, but decided to give her a second chance, and soon began to believe that Theresa was his friend, not realising that she was really trying to be close to him in an effort to break him and Gwen up and get him for herself. He has never saw her as more than a friend, but she assigned meaning to even the most trivial events. Her dreams almost backfired, though, when all her talk of 'true love' helped Ethan to see how much he loved Gwen, and prompted him to propose to her. The engagement almost didn't happen when Theresa refused to give him the engagement ring (that she claimed was stuck on her finger), but luckily, Gwen and Ethan loved each other enough to work it out.

[edit] 2000

While in Harmony, after becoming engaged to Gwen, Ethan began questioning his feelings for Theresa. After cancelling his wedding to Gwen hours before the ceremony (and being disinherited by Alistair for doing so), he made a choice between Gwen and Theresa and proposed to Theresa on Christmas Eve, leading Gwen to break off their engagement the next day.

[edit] 2001

At the same time, Rebecca learned that Theresa had information for months proving that Ethan was Sam Bennett's son, and finally talked Gwen into letting her send that information to the tabloids so as to expose Theresa. Despite the tabloid blaming the event on Theresa, Ethan never believed in her guilt and still prepared to marry her and spend his life with her, but After learning of Theresa's accidental wedding to Julian, Ethan made it clear to Theresa that their relationship would be over if she told any more lies. But Theresa was still keeping one mighty big secret. On New Year's Eve, a tabloid reporter revealed that Theresa was pregnant with Julian's baby! Theresa had no choice but to tell Ethan that the reporter was telling the truth. Ethan was rocked by the news, and told Theresa their relationship was over-he could no longer put up with her secrets and lies. Theresa was completely devastated and Ethan broke off their relationship.

[edit] 2002

For months Ethan was very angry with Theresa, and even became lovers again with his ex, Gwen. when Ethan learned that Theresa has confessed to killing Julian Crane, he and Gwen try to get her off, both believed that she was innocent. What Ethan didn't realize was that Theresa thought she was covering for him! (Thanks To a fake videotape made by Rebecca.) He begged a Crane attorney, Davis, to help her, not realising that Davis has been instructed to make sure Theresa is found guilty. When the judge declared Theresa guilty, Ethan felt responsible and helped her run from the law, although he made it clear to her they would not be sharing a future together.

When Theresa went into labor at the cabin, she refused to tell Ethan because she needed more time to convince him that he still loved her. Ethan would have remained clueless if Gwen had not shown up on the scene, and finally forced Ethan to realize that Theresa was actually in labor. With Ethan and Gwen's help, Theresa gave birth to a baby boy, just as the police burst in! They took Theresa back to the city, where they prepared to execute her. Eventually Theresa was, but it was all an act to bring Julian Crane- who was alive- back to Harmony. Ethan was glad Theresa was alive, but was committed to Gwen.

In time, he purchased an engagement ring for Gwen, but then began to waver and feel for Theresa again. He again chose to be with her, but after learning Gwen was pregnant, he convinced Gwen that he truly loved her and wanted her, and they wed. Theresa wasn't willing to accept that it was over despite Ethan's assurances that he loved his wife.

[edit] 2003

Theresa never lost her love for Ethan, and although he still loved her he had to do what was best for his wife, and unborn child. He was devoted to Gwen, because of her difficult pregnancy. The two decided to leave town and to California for awhile. Unknown to them, Theresa decided to visit her friends there not knowing the couple were traveling to L.A also. However, Gwen collapsed from difficulties, and had to be sent to the hospital. Ethan was encouraged by her to stay at the Crane apartment- where Theresa was visiting! The two former loves found themselves together again!

Despite his marriage vows, Ethan still loved Theresa, and the two kissed that kiss was caught by a cameraman, and News Reporter, and broadcast throughout L.A! When Gwen saw the report on television, she couldn't believe what she saw and sought out her husband looking for answers. A poolside confrontation between Gwen and Theresa resulted in Gwen ending up needing medical care. Devastated, Ethan blamed Theresa, and himself. A disoriented Gwen was taken to the hospital where doctors informed Ethan that he had to choose to either save Gwen's life or the baby's. Ethan chose to save Gwen's life and baby Sarah Winthrop was stillborn.

[edit] 2004

Then when Ethan and Gwen adopted Little Ethan after the courts took him from Theresa, Theresa stole Ethan and Gwen's embryo to have implanted in her to trade for her son. When she thought she had lost the baby, she drugged Ethan and slipped into his bed one night dressed as Gwen. Ethan soon realised Theresa had raped him, but after she swore that she didn't drug him that night, he assumed she was telling the truth.

However, it was soon discovered that Theresa was in fact carrying twins, although the maternity and paternity of the twins was unknown. After being informed by Dr. Eve Russell her body was unable to successfully carry both children to term she was given the option of a medical abortion, which would kill one child, while ensuring the other would live. Theresa agreed, to have the child with the best chances of survival to be saved.

After delivering a healthy baby girl prematurely less than a month later, DNA testing proved Theresa to be the biological mother of the little girl (and Ethan to be the biological father), much to Gwen's dismay. Theresa later decided to name daughter she shares with Ethan, Jane Winthrop after Jane Eyre.

[edit] 2005

Gwen became mad with grief, and stabbed Theresa in the back with a hospital scalpel. She was arrested and put in jail, while Theresa fell into a coma. Ethan was devastated for both women. Theresa woke, but was temporarily paralyzed. Gwen, began having fantasies of she and Ethan being a family with their children: Sarah, Nathan, and Jane (who Gwen was referring to as Ashley). Gwen was also receiving treatment at the hospital for a failed suicide attempt. She later kidnapped Jane and hid her in the Crane cabin. Ethan and Theresa lead a frantic search for their child. Gwen eventually left the cabin with Jane, and invaded Katherine Crane's flight on the Crane jet. Ethan, and Theresa grew closer while trying to find their daughter. Ethan also began growing closer to his father and half-siblings. After learning his half-sister Jessica Bennett had been assaulted, he, along with Chad Harris, and Fox Crane tarnished and destroyed the nightclub in which it occurred.

Soon Ethan, Theresa and Fox learned Gwen, Jane, and Katherine were being held prisoner by Alistair at the Crane Compound. They rescued them from the Compound located on an island, thus reuniting Theresa and Jane. Ethan planned to sue for custody of Jane, but offered to let Theresa keep their daughter if she would end the war with Gwen. Theresa pressed charges against Gwen hoping that Ethan would turn to her with Gwen in prison, and Ethan sued for custody as he had originally intended. Gwen was acquitted once it was revealed that a drug interaction had caused her behavior, and the judge gave custody to Ethan and Gwen, in part because of the method Theresa used to conceive the child.

Ethan's heart broke for Theresa. Some time after the court decision, he admitted to her that he did truly love her, but would not break his marriage vows to be with her. It could not have come at a worse time when the town of Harmony was struck by an earthquake and tsunami. Ethan saved Theresa's life numerous times. Though Theresa believed this drew them together again, Ethan was adamant that he was not going to leave his wife. Desperate, Theresa married Alistair Crane in an attempt to move into the Crane Mansion to look for clues to prove her innocence of the tabloid scandal to Ethan, but he was appalled by her actions. He softened however, after learning Theresa was being violated night after night by Alistair.

Also during this time, Ethan served as lawyer for Dr. Eve Russell's attempted murder trial. It was later, declared a mis-trial.

Theresa soon began trying to kill Alistair. She first tried to smother him with a pillow but Fancy Crane walked in and stopped her. Soon after, Theresa put aspirin in a guacamole dip intending to kill Alistair. But tragically Ethan ate the dip and collapsed to everyone's horror. Ethan was hospitalized and tests proved that he was brain-dead. Theresa was ridden with guilt about hurting the man she loved.

Gwen decided to take Ethan off life support as per his wishes, but Theresa wouldn't hear of it and enlisted the help of Noah Bennett to help her kidnap Ethan. When everybody's backs were turned Theresa and Noah took Ethan from the hospital and took him to the Crane Cabin. Gwen eventually found them and took Ethan back to the hospital where she still planned to let Ethan go, but decided to wait until after Christmas. At the Christmas Eve service Theresa prayed to God that if he would bring Ethan back she would leave Gwen and Ethan alone forever. Just as the service began Ethan entered the church alive and well. Ethan forgave Theresa for accidentally poisoning him.

Soon after Alistair threw a New Year's Eve party. Every resident from Harmony was lured to the mansion one way or another. At the strike of midnight the lights went out and screams filled the air. Soon the lights came back on revealing everyone passed out on the floor; they soon all woke up and disbursed to find and possibly kill Alistair.

Ethan, Gwen, Rebecca, and Theresa all ran into Alistair and he revealed that he had changed the hospital test results on Ethan to show that he was brain-dead when he really wasn't. That didn't bode too well for Ethan and when Alistair was stabbed, everyone including Ethan was a suspect. Ethan was soon cleared of the crime and it was later revealed (only to Julian) that Liz had stabbed Alistair because he had once raped her.

[edit] 2006

Theresa soon began trying to seduce Ethan every chance she got. Ethan and Gwen got so sick of her that the couple secretly planned to move to India. But in a catfight Gwen revealed what they were planning. Theresa had no way to stop them and was crushed. Ethan, Gwen, and Jane boarded the Crane jet to leave but they were stopped from taking off when Theresa found a DVD that Alistair had made and his will stated that all of them needed to see it. The DVD proved a great help to Theresa when Alistair appeared on the television screen and told everyone that Theresa was the new head of the Crane Empire. Theresa grounded the plane and forced Ethan and Gwen to stay in Harmony, much to their dismay. Theresa also (once again) prevented Ethan from getting a job anywhere in the country so he would have to stay in Harmony. Ethan, Gwen, and Jane moved into the B&B Hotel to get away from Theresa. Theresa offered Ethan an extravagant job at Crane Industries and offered to let him oversee the creation of the plans he had made for improving Harmony. But Ethan denied the offer and got a job working on a garage and Gwen got a job working at Colier and Co., which Theresa secretly set up in an attempt to drive a wedge between Ethan and Gwen.

Soon mysterious events where drawing the residents of Harmony to Rome. Theresa found out that Jessica, Paloma, and Simone were in danger so she asked Ethan to accompany her to Rome to save his half-sister. Ethan agreed and they went to Rome. Ethan and Theresa were forced to stay in a hotel suite together when Theresa received and e-mail telling her that someone from Harmony would die in Rome. Ethan wanted to be near Theresa to protect her.

Very soon Theresa found J.T. Cornell, the editor of the tabloid in which Ethan's paternity was revealed. Theresa got the evidence she needed to show him that it was Gwen and Rebecca who set the truth of Ethan's paternity to the tabloids. But soon Rebecca called J.T. and convinced him to take the evidence and run. J.T. managed to get away from Theresa in time. Ethan was convinced she was lying and stormed out on her.

After Theresa finally gave up on Ethan, Ethan became upset and very jealous of Jared Casey. When Pilar (Theresa's Mother) was shot Ethan went to see her, she told him to leave Gwen and go be a family with Theresa Little Ethan and Jane. Later on, Theresa and Jared were staying at the same hotel as Ethan and Gwen. Ethan accidentally crawled into Theresa's bed. They were both drunk and he thought that she was Gwen and Theresa thought that he was Jared. They ended up having sex.

[edit] Attitude

Ethan appears to be a decent and honorable person on the outside, however, his actions have proved him to be neither over the course of the show. He has lied, cheated, done just as much bad deeds as everyone else.

[edit] Hidden Passions

In the book Hidden Passions, Ethan's paternal grandparents were Benjamin Bennett and Margaret Joyce Bennett. Ethan also had at least two more uncles on Sam's side. Information in the book has not been confirmed on-screen and is not considered to be official since the information seen on the show contradicts much of what was said in the book.
