[edit] Childhood

Little Ethan was born in one of the many Crane cabins on June 21, 2002, with the help of Ethan Winthrop and Gwen Hotchkiss. Little Ethan's mother, Theresa, was on the run after confessing to murdering her husband, Julian (thought to be at the time, Little Ethan's father). After initial respiratory problems, Little Ethan turned out to be a healthy baby boy. Theresa named him after the man she believes to be the love of her life, Ethan Winthrop, and her father, the then-missing Martin Fitzgerald - "the two most important men in [her] life".

Little Ethan spent the first year of his life living in the Crane mansion with his mother and, eventually, his father, once Julian was revealed to be alive after all. It was when he was a few months shy of his first birthday that it was revealed that his parents' marriage was invalid, and his father immediately filed for custody of him. His mother fought, and his father eventually agreed to let her take care of their son as long as she didn't leave the Crane grounds.

Little Ethan spent the summer of 2003 with his maternal grandmother, Pilar, while his mother was in Los Angeles, and when the L.A. six returned late that year, Little Ethan was aged to be a toddler. Unjustly furious about Theresa's part in her granddaughter's stillbirth, Little Ethan's new stepmother, Rebecca, reported Theresa to Child Protective Services, and after an "investigation" and numerous bribes CPS decided that the boy was better off with his biological father, and he was moved into the Crane mansion. It was there that his stepsister, Gwen, decided to convince her husband, Ethan, to adopt Little Ethan with her, to exact revenge on Theresa. During his time at the Crane mansion, Little Ethan was aged to eight, Theresa's parental rights were terminated, and Ethan and Gwen adopted Little Ethan as their son in April 2004, renaming him Ethan Winthrop Jr.

This adoption was short-lived. Little Ethan was rightfully returned to his mother after the birth of his half-sister, Jane, thanks to a loophole in the surrogacy papers that Theresa signed. He moved back to the Lopez-Fitzgerald home with his mother, where he remained until his mother moved back into the Crane mansion as Alistair Crane's guest in August 2005. When his mother married Alistair on October 3, 2005, Alistair revealed that their prenup allowed him to adopt Little Ethan. Little Ethan was then renamed Ethan Lopez-Fitzgerald Crane (Martin is no longer part of his name), and Alistair declared him the heir to the Crane empire.

Little Ethan witnessed Alistair's evil on more than one occasion, although Alistair never harmned the boy, though he made several lude and vulger gestures and remarks to Little Ethan's mother Theresa, since Alistair was raping Theresa. Alistair molded Little Ethan into what he believed would be the perfect Crane. Luckily Alistair "died" a few months later.

In June 2006, it was revealed that, despite all the previous medical evidence to the contrary, Little Ethan was in fact Theresa's son with Ethan, conceived weeks before the night she slept with Julian in Bermuda. Instead of revealing her son's true paternity, Theresa instead chose to continue to allow everyone, except for her mother, Pilar, and best friend, Whitney, to believe that Julian was her son's biological father.

[edit] Hidden Passions

In the book Hidden Passions, Ethan's paternal great-grandparents were Benjamin Bennett and Margaret Joyce Bennett (on Sam's side). He also had at least two more great-uncles on Sam's side. Information in the book has not been confirmed on-screen and is not considered to be official since the information seen on the show contradicts much of what was said in the book.
