Ethan (Guardians of Time)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ethan Roberts is one of the lead characters in the Guardians of Time series by Marianne Curley. In the first book (of three), The Named, Ethan narrates the adventures with Isabel Becket, friend and fellow member of The Guard. Throughout the books Ethan is sixteen and seventeen years old, presumably, based on Isabel's aging.
As one of the main characters, his personality and past is given a lot of work. At four years old Ethan witnessed his ten year old sister, Sera, die at the hands of Marduke, one of The Guards many enemies. Unknown to his family, Ethan received training and soon participated in, and led, missions into the past.
At age 16, he received an apprentice, Isabel, who also is the younger sister of an ex-friend, Matt. Before The Named takes place, Matt begins to date Rochelle, who is secretly a member of The Order, which puts stress on Matt and Ethan's friendship. Ethan is endowed with multiple gifts, from projecting illusions that can become reality and telekinetic powers to teleportation and instinct.
An intelligent student, Ethan enjoys his missions, which often take him to castles or villages in the Middle Ages. He often must go under cover and uses a special magic that enables him to speak multiple languages.
He plays a key role in The Guard's success, although his personal life and stressful family situation affects his work often. At the end of third book, The Key, it seems likely that he and Rochelle, whom has changed her ways and joined her old enemies, will be together. This fantasy is cut short when tragedy strikes.
