Estación Retiro (Spanish for "Retiro Station") is a large train station in central Buenos Aires, Argentina. The facility is located in the city's Retiro barrio (neighborhood) and is just opposite a large public square called Plaza San Martín.
One of Argentina's busiest ground transportation centers, Retiro is the terminus of multiple passenger railway lines and is adjacent to the Terminal de Omnibus, a major long-distance bus terminal. The complex is accessible by the C line of the Buenos Aires Metro system and by numerous local public bus lines.
[edit] Communter Rail Services
Retiro is the largest commuter rail station in Buenos Aires and more commuter trains arrive and depart from here than any other station in the city. As of 2006, the following companies operate regular services into the Buenos Aires suburbs along three principal lines:
- UGOFE[1]: Service to Pilar along its San Martín line
- Trenes de Buenos Aires: Service to José León Suárez, Tigre, and Bartolomé Mitre along the three branches of its Mitre line
- Ferrovías: Service to Villa Rosa along its Belgrano line
[edit] Long-Distance Trains
In addition to its status as the hub of extensive communter railway activity, Retiro is also the terminus of a few long-distance passenger rail lines which provide access to cities in the north and west. As of 2006, the following companies manage the following long-distance railway services:
- Ferrocentral: Twice weekly overnight passenger trains west to Córdoba, once weekly overnight train northwest to Tucumán, both via Rosario and points between
- Trenes de Buenos Aires: Weekly overnight trains north to Santa Fé, via Rosario and points between
- Ferrobaires: Daily evening trains west to Junín and points between
It is planned that Retiro will be the Buenos Aires terminus for the Buenos Aires-Rosario-Córdoba high-speed railway.
