Please leave messages on my talk page.

I don't like for outdated discussions to remain on my talk page; I absolutely hate clutter, and frankly, there is no real reason for a week-old discussion to still be sitting on my talk page. I believe old discussions make the page hard to read, both for me and for other users, and they make other users less likely to leave a message. In the spirit of clutter-free talk pages and uncensored archival, I present here all previous discussions, in the order they were removed from my talk page.

Note: Some discussions are archived on separate pages either:

  1. Because I archived them there before I created this archive, or
  2. Because they were too long for this archive.

Those archive pages are listed below as well.

[edit] Deleting me and other matters

Firstly, to the PDF file: I have absolutely no idea. I tried restoring and deleting again, but to no avail. I don't get the PDF warning (yes, I'm in FF too), so I don't know what's going on there. As to deleting me, I guess I can but smile and accept my fate. However, if I'm going to be drawn and quartered, does that make me a Wiki-martyr? Do I get a place in the vaults of the Protestant Church of Wikipedia? Cheers, smoddy 21:36, 6 August 2005 (UTC)

That would be very nice. May I be Dean of the College of Cardinals? Please? Pretty please? (Of course, I guess it would be the General Synod in a Protestant church...) smoddy 22:10, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
Woot. (I've always wanted to say that) Look, just because you're Peter, you can't just go around changing the name however you want. But, nevertheless, I like the simple Catholic Church of Wikipedia (forgetting the Anglo- and Roman wings -- ecumenical concord, what bliss!). I'll see about putting the Ordinary into Latin, as befits such a noble and historic organisation. Goodnight, father. smoddy 22:25, 6 August 2005 (UTC)

No need to undelete Michael Salla--stuff that needs be added to exopolitics can be done without the article which I will do in a day or so. Marskell 03:59, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ralph Woodrow article

Dear SJ

I am somewhat new to Wikipedia (though i have lurked often) and have a variety of interests -

one of which is religion.

While discussing religious issues on messageboards the topic of pagan roots of Christianity arose as well as the typical invectives espoused by Alexander Hislop and his 'Two Babylons'

* there are articles fully describing his views on Wikipedia

the articles refer to RALPH WOODROW (a protestant minister) who wrote a book AGREEING with HISLOP that Catholicism (and to a great extent) Christianity is founded on Pagan Babylon

I am sure that you are aware of these discussions ...

I have attempted twice to place AN ARTICLE ON RALPH WOODROW at the appropriate link in Wikipedia

The first attempt was rejected because someone feared it infringed upon copyright
(though I had Mr. Woodrows permission to post it)

the second/third attempt is where you came in ~ and centered around the discussion as to whether the article was well written and 'encyclopedic' enough as well as whether the author was of enough note to 'deserve' an article ...

Mr. Woodrow is well-known with over 500,000 books sold and is often quoted as an opponent
of the 'all is pagan' view -- His name invokes thousands of 'hits' on google or yahoo.

I am a bit perplexed after reading your credentials as to why you removed the article on Mr. Ralph Woodrow.

The INITIAL article was FULLY EDITED and TOTALLY RE-WRITTEN and POLISHED so as to follow the style of the Wikipedia site

The FINAL article that you deleted (based on others earlier votes PRIOR to re-write) was I believe, finally in an acceptable form.

The TOPIC is important, to both Christians and non-christians alike and given that Mr. Hislops views are extensively represented on Wikipedia, is all the more reason that VALID CRITICISM of that view be also represented. Wikipedia itself notes that RALPH WOODROW objects to HISLOPS views - yet the LINK to WHY remains blank.

I appeal to your Wikipedian sense of fair play and ask that you please re-consider the RECENT DELETION of the article on RALPH WOODROW. Would you UN-DELETE the article on WOODROW.

If by some chance, you feel that the subject does indeed warrant inclusion, but feel that the existing article is lacking... I would impose upon you further to ask that you personally 'tweak' it, so that it would meet with your (and Wikipedia's) approval.

I stand ready to assist in any way and have been in contact with the now elderly Mr. Woodrow who is willing to approve any reasonable representation of his views.

God Bless

Michael@filecastle.com

M-filecastle 02:03, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

I responded on your talk page. As I said there, it was the consensus on VfD to delete, and I was just carrying out the orders of the people. I have no control over the decision that is made, and cannot disregard it. -- Essjay · Talk 02:18, August 8, 2005 (UTC)

i hate to bother you further but several aspects of this process bother me

one - it (article) was hastily voted for deletion by a few members who seemingly had no particluar interest in the subject
Their comments indicated that they had NO KNOWLEDGE of the topic, the authors etc ...

Even if their underlying basis 'poorly written' was the reason,
the article was ENTIRELY RE-WRITTEN by the time you actually saw it
and bore virtually NO RESEMBLANCE to the original attempt.
ON WHICH MOST OF THE VOTES TO DELETE WERE BASED.

Several of the posters voting 'delete' indicated that the article should/could be re-written instead of deleted

another poster - not me - began this effort and i added to their work ...

I think the FINAL ARTICLE was acceptable.

Wikipedia 'rules' indicated that reagarding the MEMBERS voting
VFD is not democratic
and that ultimately decisions on deletion are at the discretion of Administrators.

I am not savy enough (yet) to place the article in the 'please undelete' category

Could you assist by placing it there or provide the proper link?

IF THE ARTICLE WERE 'TWEAKED' even further by someone (such as yourself) and resubmitted... I believe that it would pass 'muster' and finally provide 'Wikipedians' with the broader understanding that this topic so richly deserves.

It is simply not fair that the CRITICISM of the FALSELY held view that Catholicism and Christianity are fundamentally pagan in origin stands un-refuted.

I dont mean to additonally appeal to your espoused Christian beliefs - but considering that you've shared them on your bio -

it would also seem to be a concern you yourself might hold.

Woodrow shows that Hislops false analogies make virtually any and all aspects of Christianity appear to be of pagan origin.

Your experiece here, coupled with your knowledge of the subject would make you a good pro-ponent of the need for such an article.

Please ~

  • reconsider for undelete (since orignial objection was re-written)
  • reconsider for undelete (since early voters did not know topic)
  • reconsider for undelete (since subject has merit)
  • reconsider for undelete (citing Administrative discretion)
  • reconsider for undelete (place in VOTE for UNDELETE)

[edit] Loging in

There are hundreds of us who use this terminal in this place.

Perhaps you could explain to me how it is possible to log in properly, identify myself more publicly and actually make contributions to many of these erroneous entries. I look forward to your response.

No problem. Go to Special:Login (or the link at the top of every page that says Create Account/Log In). Fill in a username and password (and an email if you would like to be able to use the "email this user" feature or recover lost passwords) and voila, you will be logged in. Just remember to make sure you log in each time you use the site. -- Essjay · Talk 06:51, August 8, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] monobook.js

(Oops, darn that enter key.)

What I meant to ask before accidentally saving a blank message is: We talked about your monobook.js on IRC yesterday, and discussed me copying it to my monobook.js and adding a block feature to the list. However, I've been unsuccessful; every time I try to enter the feature, it doesn't work, and all the features your code is supposed to insert disappear. Since you seem to know something about this, could you tell me: What do I need to do to add the "block user" tags to user & user talk pages? -- Essjay · Talk 04:53, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

I'll look into it on the Wikicities site I'm an admin at... try asking ABCD though. Alphax τεχ 07:33, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

I've now asked ABCD; I'll appreciate any help either of you can offer. Thanks! -- Essjay · Talk 07:42, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

Um, I've got the "block" and "blocklog" tabs working - but the autofilling of the usernames doesn't seem to work for me. Does it work for ABCD? Alphax τεχ 08:15, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
Well, it's kinda kludgy, but I've added:
function add_block_tab()
{
    var c1 = document.getElementById('column-one');
    var tabs = document.getElementById('p-cactions').getElementsByTagName('ul')[0];

    // use the "edit this page" tab to get already-tidied url
    var editlk = document.getElementById('ca-edit').getElementsByTagName('a')[0].href;
    // cut everything up to "title=" from the start and everything past "&action=edit" from the end
    editlk = editlk.substring(editlk.indexOf('title=') + 6, editlk.lastIndexOf('&action=edit'));
    editlk = editlk.substring(editlk.indexOf(':') + 1);
    var slloc = editlk.indexOf('/');
    if(slloc > 0) editlk = editlk.substring(0, slloc);

    // add "block" tab
    addlilink(tabs, '/wiki/Special:Blockip?faketarget=' + editlk, 'block', );

    // add "blocklog" tab
    addlilink(tabs, '/wiki/Special:Log/block?page=User:' + editlk, 'blocklog', );
}
and in morelinks():
if(document.title.indexOf('User:') == 0 || document.title.indexOf('User talk:') == 0)
{
    add_block_tab();
}
Try that... Alphax τεχ 08:49, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

Errh... what is this all about? Lupo 10:53, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

This is a thread. If you want to stay synchronised, don't substitute it. Some of us are considering forming a wikiproject (or something) to coordinate on scripts for the Monobook skin. Ironically, almost of all of it will be implemented in JS, not CSS. I thought you might be a knowledgable person when it comes to this stuff. Alphax τεχ 13:58, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
Guys, just posting a link to here on people's talk pages is good enough to attract interested parties. Transcluding this screws up section editing on all affected talk pages. And I don't think I'll get the new message alert anyway if this is transcluded. Lupo 14:07, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
Help us decide a name then! Alphax τεχ 15:07, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
As to coordinating scripts for the Monobook skin: what's the objective? A library of plug-in JavaScript snippets? A manual for the CSS used? Lupo 14:07, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
Yes, a library of plugins. Alphax τεχ 15:07, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
I can try to help with css more than js btw as I'm much better than that (but still not that good). If anyone needs a person to double check stuff I also have a bit o' time on me hands =) This project looks cool though. Sasquatch 19:42, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

What is the link to the monobook project? - Ta bu shi da yu 00:12, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

There isn't one yet, we need a name and to decide where it should be located (on WP:, meta:, commons:)... Alphax τεχ 04:04, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
I think it should be in the Wikipedia namespace. Good idea, btw. - Ta bu shi da yu 04:18, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
Though I know very little about JS and how it works and most of the stuff on my monobook.js is just copied and pasted I'd be willing to join since I've been meaning to learn javascript and it would be a good way to put real use to it. I also think it should be on the WP: namespace btw. Jtkiefer T | @ | C ----- 15:53, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] WTF?

Okay - what gives? I've just had to unblock myself (202.180.83.6) - for some reason you blocked me (the reason you gave was vandalism), yet there's no mention either of my username or IP address on WP:VIP. I was in the middle of a series of tricky edits, the thread of which I'm now going to have to start from scratch. What are you up to? Grutness...wha? 11:03, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

No, that's fair enough - sorry I got angry. I'd never heard of WP:AIV, which explains why I never saw the warning (not that I'd have known my IP number anyway). What normally happens in circumstances like this? If you want to block for 12 hours, I'll finish up what I'm doing (give me quarter of an hour), and you can block for that time without getting in my way (it's 10.15 at night here, so it'll stop me spending half the night online!). Grutness...wha? 11:17, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
No, that's fine. it wasn't anything quite as devastating as rewriting an article; I was busy archiving a Wikiproject page. I'd cut and saved the project, but wasn't able to re-save the material in an archive, so I had it sitting around on my computer's clipboard looking for a home. And at the same time I was also taking a couple of stub types over to the "Stub types for deletion" page, so I was juggling templates on them and trying to compose my thoughts about them for the deletion page. Just the usual sort of mess I get into when doing two jobs at once :) I wonder who the vandal is... if it's the same IP, chances are it might be someone who lives not far from me, right? Grutness...wha? 11:33, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for that! And apologies again for the obvious annoyance in my unblock, especially - given your beliefs - my use of the "H" word ;) Grutness...wha? 12:29, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Need advice

You responded to one of my questions previously so I am asking you this one. Based on reading your user and talk pages, I should say I am not asking you the administrator to resolve a content dispute, I am asking you as a short-time user to a long-time-experienced user, whether you think I should "revert" something, which I have never done before.

My main interest as far as editing goes has been the page for my home community "Bridgewater Township, New Jersey."Bridgewater Township, New Jersey I have done extensive editing and have "revamped" the article to a large degree, and have been "watching" to see what happens. I'd like you to look at the edit that was made today, by someone with just an IP address. The person identifies him/herself as a student in the local school district, and has added to the section on "Education" a very opinionated, critical screed against the school district. Being familiar with the school district myself, I can tell you that while there is perhaps a grain of truth in some of these complaints, many of the same things could be said about other districts (including the ones he says people are leaving our district for, which I don't think is true.) I don't think any high school in New Jersey or anywhere else gets uniform high grades from its students. I also don't think these comments are "neutral point of view" nor is most of it suitable for an encyclopedia article because it deals with minor matters of interest only to those living in town, if at all. I suppose some might even call it "vandalism." In any event there are other, more "local" forums where comments can be made and responded to. I just don't think Wikipedia is the appropriate place for this.

My question is, is it appropriate for me to immediately "revert" this edit and then post something on the Discussion page, inviting the person to support what he has said and/or tone it down (or hopefully, just forget about it)? Or do I post something on Discussion and say that I will revert it in 24 or 48 hours? Or something else? Again, I am just asking for advice, not to resolve a "dispute", which as I understand it, will not exit unless and until I "revert" and the person disputes it. Or if my understanding of the procedures is incorrect, please let me know that, too.

This is quite an interesting issue; a few months ago, I removed the copyvio and then organized the article into sections and cleaned up the links. For some reason, several anon editors in the block 212.138.47.* seem to take offence at my "touching" "their" article, and started vandalizing my user/talk pages. Some of these vandals were blocked by other admins.

Last week, these vandals created several sockpuppet accounts, including Antirajib (talk contribs). You can see from the account name what its purpose was. The user vandalized my user/talk pages besides leaving abusive comments. The user was blocked immediately.

Yesterday and today, there has been a parade of sockpuppets all directed at either launching personal attacks, or avoiding 3RR. You can find several incoherent rants in Talk:Rohingya, my talk (User talk:Ragib and Mel's talk User talk:Mel Etitis. The language constructs and the irrational attitude ("how-dare-I-touch-their-article-being-a-Bengali" etc) points out a single user behind all these.

I find the following accounts as sockpuppets of the same vandal from the ip block 212.138.47.*

I urge everyone to take a look at the page history, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rohingya&curid=1918632&action=history . This is not even a dispute over content! I have not added or deleted any content other than the initial copyvio. I simply organized the article with sections, and cleaned up the external links. One of the links point to a blog, which the vandals ferociously object to as being termed a blog. I've gotten literally tired of the abuse these vandals launched on me. The level of racial and personal abuse is quite hard to take. Since it would be a conflict of interest in my part to take actions against these vandals, I would request you to look into this issue and decide.

Thanks a lot. --Ragib 13:12, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

Responded on your talk page. -- Essjay · Talk 05:02, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
Hey Essjay, thanks for your motivating message. I have looked back and I think I can overcome the issue, by taking a positive attitude. After talking to other admins, I have decided to just ignore the abuses. I think I should follow Lincoln as quoted in Wikipedia:Avoid personal remarks. Anyway, I will now focus on enhancing the article. Handling the vandals there was taking too much of my time anyway ... I haven't had time to work on my to-do list for some time. Anyway, thanks again for your motivating words ... Wish you all the best. --Ragib 05:08, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Anonymous IP whack-a-mole

Despite your missteps in blocking the Jimbo stalker, you have been granted a plenary indulgence absolving you of your Wikisins. You have my sympathy; I've been chasing a vandal who has been adding Template:AOL to random user talk pages outside the AOL IP space. The worst part is that he was doing it from an AOL account, so I couldn't block him effectively. I was sorely tempted to block all of the AOL proxies in New York state for a while...wouldn't that have created a stir on WP:AN/I! TenOfAllTrades(talk) 12:47, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

Why thank you Ten! Would you like to be a WikiCardinal? -- Essjay · Talk 05:03, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Upload

Quick question that may require and admin: I have uploaded an image of St. Catherine of Siena. I could not find any mention of copyright, but I cited the website in the summary of the image and on my user page. Have I done this correctly? I don't want to be in violation of any copyright policy or law. Psy Guy 17:42, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

Unfortunately, it was a copyvio. I've sent you an email about it. -- Essjay · Talk 04:11, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Could you give me some advice?

Hey, could you do me a favor? I've gotten into a dispute with another user, that's starting to look like it'll include a third user (who's suggested, I think rather absurdly, that I'm trying to persecute Christians), about how Category:Born-again Christians should be defined and who should be included. I was wondering if you could take a look at the talk page and let me know first if you think I'm wrong about the Biblical figures issue and second if I was wrong to describe the initial category definition as (anti-ecumenical) POV-pushing. I'm not asking you to get involved in the discussion if you don't want to, but if you could take a look and then leave me a message on my talk page with some advice, I'd really appreciate it. [edit] Thanks!

Man, I can't thank you enough. This is no damn fun when you feel as if you're being held under a microscope. - Lucky 6.9 06:28, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

I have MSN, but I'm not set up for IM. And, my e-mail is routed to my work address, at least right now. I can fix that. - Lucky 6.9 06:39, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

LOL! Diggin' the pitbull! - Lucky 6.9 06:43, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

Gotcha. I'll set it up tomorrow. Thanks again! - Lucky 6.9 06:45, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] re: m:Transwiki

Will do. Unfortunately, I'm headed out of town in just a few minutes. Just stopped in to check messages - don't really have time to look at any articles today. Can I have a week to get back to you? Thanks. Rossami (talk) 12:54, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] St. Catherine

I'm sorry to be so much trouble. I hope it wasn't a terrible inconvience. I appreciate your help. At your leisure, check out the article on St. Catherine of Siena and let me know your opinion on the image I chose from the commons. Peace be with you. Psy Guy 17:58, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hey EssJay, I'd like to borrow your cool head if possible

Hey Essjay, I know you're pretty busy with the beginning of the school year, but you're also the most cool headed person on Wikipedia that I know, so I was wondering if you could assist with a debate that has the potential for conflict, the core of it is here -- Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Watch/schoolwatch. I'll ask some other people I know if they can assist as well. Karmafist 03:40, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, Karmafist, one of the ways I've managed to maintain a reputation as a cool head is to not get into disputes that have the possibility of turning personal (i.e. "Essjay, you just don't like school articles" or "Essjay, you just don't like the people voting "delete."). I do my best to stay out of conflicts/discussions that don't really involve me, and since I've never voted in any school VfD, (I've probably closed a few, but that's an admin action only) I'm ruling that this doesn't involve me. I'm going to stay cool-headed on the sideline (or as my grandmother would have said "If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.") Best of luck! -- Essjay · Talk 18:45, August 14, 2005 (UTC)
