Please leave messages on my talk page.

I don't like for outdated discussions to remain on my talk page; I absolutely hate clutter, and frankly, there is no real reason for a week-old discussion to still be sitting on my talk page. I believe old discussions make the page hard to read, both for me and for other users, and they make other users less likely to leave a message. In the spirit of clutter-free talk pages and uncensored archival, I present here all previous discussions, in the order they were removed from my talk page.

Note: Some discussions are archived on separate pages either:

  1. Because I archived them there before I created this archive, or
  2. Because they were too long for this archive.

Those archive pages are listed below as well.

[edit] Re: Requests for Checkuser Clerkship

Ok, incase you haven't already noticed by me being in the clerk channel, I'm still interested, so I'll go read some help files and the like. ;) Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 04:37, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Requests for Checkuser Clerkship

Much like the people above, I am also very happy to help out by being a Checkuser clerk. Thanks very much. DarthVader 05:52, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Wonderful! (I'm running out of ways to say that...) Daniel will get you fitted for your waders and issue your box of bandaids for papercuts resulting from excessive filing. ;) Essjay (Talk) 05:56, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Spelling

Well you'd have to go back 19 years and stop my parents committing the horrible sin of naming me.... wait a minute, I LIKE MY NAME!! Anyway mistake pardoned, I'll share the "secret" of remembering my name: just remember "StrikeIt" (© sean_black) and later drop the initial "t". Too much trouble?? Screw it all and call me eww ;) Cheers --Srikeit 06:20, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

You know, I'm pretty frequently tempted to do just that! Essjay (Talk) 00:26, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Wikipedia:Naming conventions (television)

I was wondering if you could un-delete Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Wikipedia:Naming conventions (television) for the time being. There's a request for arbitration at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration#Naming Conventions for TV-episodes articles, and some of the links and diffs being used are from the mediation request. -- Ned Scott 09:23, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Didn't see this here. I'd like to second the request to get the page undeleted. I believe the page itself and the steps leading to mediation being rejected may prove to be important evidence in the ArbCom proceeding.  Anþony  talk  00:19, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
I got it. Thatcher131 00:19, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
That's fine; generally, we don't allow mediation communications to be used as evidence, but this one never made it to actual mediation, so I'll leave it to the Arbitrators to decide whether it is valid as evidence. Essjay (Talk) 01:04, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
I'll bear that in mind if I see a similar request in the future. Thanks. Thatcher131 02:09, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My RfA

Thank you for your kind comments regarding my RfA. While it was a shame that it did not achieve consensus with a final support tally of 51, the huge level of support and the comments made with oppose votes will help me to improve and hopefully be promoted next time. Thanks again. :) Wikiwoohoo 20:25, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Can you please mediate the MSN Games conflict?

A user, who does not have an account with Wikipedia, keeps reverting the MSN Games article to a version with his advertisement in it. He does nothing but harass those who delete it out.

Can you please handle him?

TFX 09:12, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm, I'm not entirely sure you understand the nature of mediation at Wikipedia; mediations are not conducted by making requests on mediator's talk pages, but by filing a request at WP:RFM, after having read and understood the nature of mediation. This, however, is not a matter for mediation; simply mention it on WP:AIV and an administrator will look into the matter. Essjay (Talk) 00:43, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Lost episodes

This mediation case, which I handled while you were hors de combat, has become a peripheral issue in Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Naming Conventions. Apparently, one of the participants in the mediation made a suggestion early on, which was not incorporated into the final agreement, but she has allegedly told others that it was, to support her position on the naming of TV episode articles. Given your comments above, I don't know if you want to look in on this or not. Thatcher131 03:37, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm, this is a . The general rule is, communications made in good faith during a mediation may not later be used outside the mediation as evidence. The intent is to prevent a user from making good faith comments in mediation and later having them used against them in Arbitration or other dispute resolution. I think the point here is going to be whether what is being used as evidence is a mediation communication, or if it is just the result of the mediation that is being referenced. At the risk of being pedantic, long-winded, and perhaps legalistic, I think it is fine for them to say "There was a mediation. We came to a decision. The decision can be viewed [[RFM page|here]]." It would not, however, be fine for them to say "S/he has a history of misrepresenting things. S/he did it during the mediation case too. [[RFM page|Here]] are examples of him/her doing so during the mediation." In order for the latter to be admissible, it would have to rise to the level of bad faith intended to disrupt the mediation, which would be very difficult to prove if the mediation was concluded successfully. As long as what is being said remains in the line of "You can see the text of the agreement here" and stays away from "You can see this user's conduct here" it is fine; if it moves into the latter, then the Mediation Committee would need to look into it more carefully and consult with the Arbitration Committee. In the end, however, I trust the Arbitrators to say "You can't use that" when it's inadmissable, so it's really more of an academic exercise about making sure the Mediation Committee's commitment to confidentiality is visibly upheld; I have no doubt that, with regard to the AC, it is always actually upheld. Essjay (Talk) 03:55, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
I think put in its starkest terms the allegation would be that she misrepresented the results of the mediation once it was over, but not that there was any problem during the mediation. So it seems to be allowable for now. Thatcher131 04:12, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Elections

I am frankly appalled by the use of a dysfunctional (and discredited) electoral system called approval voting to fill a single empty position on the board of trustees. It is impossible to rationally decide whom to vote for in this system unless you have a fairly accurate idea of how others are going to vote; in the absence of opinion polls, this is indeed an impossibility.

Other systems avoid these problems, the obvious choice would be a single transferable vote system.

I'm trying to find out who decided to use this system, whether there was any discussion leading up to it, and whether there's any way of moving to a sane system.

Can you help?

[edit] monobook.css

Just wanted to let you know I found your mononbook.css on the page for that, and adapted it a bit to what I wanted--especially some minor color changes, and to make it crystal clear to me what links I've viewed/not viewed in the past 24 hours (I keep my visited history limited thus). Oh, and to make external HTTP: links shockingly bold compared to the rest of the test--especially for finding non properly formatted references in the body of text. Yours was the best one of the lot (I just needed to tweak barely a few things for my own taste). Oh, and I love the new messages notification change. Thanks! · XP · 19:13, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Talk page archive bot

Can User:EssjayBot III duplicate the type of archive I've used here?

  • Style is User_talk:Omegatron/Archive01
  • Last archive made was number 5
  • Should archive after a section has been dead for 4 months
  • 100 kB is a good maximum size

I'd like it to auto-generate the list of headings, though, on the archive page. Is that possible? I got the style from Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page, so it's probably common. (Worth writing if you haven't yet, in other words.)

Are there other bots that do this? (So I can comparison shop.)  ;-) — Omegatron 02:47, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: User:Robbie31

Hi. I was wondering if you could tell me what it is about CSS or whatever that is edited to make the appearance of Wikipedia change... if it is not too much trouble... what are the benefits? Mind changing my CSS and what else so that the appearance of Wikipedia could change and then if I don't like it, just changing it back or whatever? [edit] Edit Count?

[edit] Counter broken

This is very similar to the above question. As I clicked on your wonderful counter today to see my edit count, it said that I am "Forbidden" and "You don't have permission to access /~essjay/edit_count/Count.php on this server." My server is Internet Explorer. I hope you can get this to work again because I really like your counter (and your beautiful user page too). Thanks! Reywas92Talk 21:51, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Oh no...I'm going through editcoutitis! Help! Akradecki 22:26, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
Hello; Essjay has been inactive, so I thought I would take the liberty to comment on your question. I don't know what the matter is with his edit counter, but in the meantime, may I suggest Flcelloguy's Tool? The vast majority has been developed wonderfully by a couple of technically-proficient Wikipedians (not by myself, contrary to the name :-) ), and is not toolserver-based, meaning that it's immune to toolserver crashing, etc. The tool is intended as a backup, though, so as soon as (or if) Essjay's counter comes back online, I highly suggest using that. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 22:34, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
On a purely technical note: Internet Explorer is your browser, a client side program (the client being you, the person surfing the web). The server is on the other side of the internet, not on your computer, where the thing you are accessing is. So, the fact that you couldn't access the counter has nothing to do with the fact that you are using Internet Explorer. Armedblowfish (talk|mail|contribs) 22:57, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Mine and a few all other peoples Edit counters don't work. It is a great tool and is sorely missed. Thanks, Dfrg.msc 1 . 2 . 3 07:20, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
The permissions for the edit_count directory in Essjay's public_html on Hemlock (the new toolserver, the one which tools.wikimedia.de now points to) is set to 700, and I don't know if this is a simple mistake or if it's been disabled on purpose. You can still access the copy of the edit counter on the old toolserver *hint* *hint*. I'll e-mail Essjay and ask him what's up. Cheers, Tangotango 08:51, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Have you considered going through Wikipedia:Editor review first? It's slower, and won't make you an admin, but you'll probably get good constructive feedback that isn't as brief or harsh as if people were screening you for adminship. Honestly, I don't think you could make adminship if you nominated yourself now - a lot of voters look at edit count, and you seem to have less than 500 edits. Different people have different standards, but 3000 edits is usually considered good. But don't let that discourage you, editcountis ignores the quality of edits, and given time, I'm sure you'll be a great admin, if that's what you really want to do. : ) Armedblowfish (talk|mail|contribs) 00:49, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Essjay and Wikipedia

Please feel free to check out Essjay's contributions.

He hasn't posted anything to Wikipedia since August 14. We're assuming that he's okay, though there was one user who may have gotten a call from him in Fort Meade, Maryland, though this is dubious. For now, those of us who worked with Essjay at The Countervandalism Network must simply wait for his return.

He hasn't posted in a while. If you put a note to him here, he's not likely to see it anytime soon. It'd be best to contact someone else who can direct you to a more timely contact. Thank you. ~Kylu (u|t) 23:00, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A page on Meta

Hello Essjay, how are you? I have just joined Meta today. So it is about meta:Proposals for new projects page, where many users complained that its a total mess. I have an idea to make the page like [WP:FA]], that each project is placed in a different page. Then we can put templates on the main proposal page. How about that? I will do it real soon. Cheers -- Imoeng 12:28, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Around

Essjay is still around, he's just very, very busy. He's sorry the edit counter isn't working, but he doesn't know how to fix it; they changed servers and it's "totally borked" as he put it. He hasn't called anyone in Maryland or anywhere else, and would like to make it clear that he will never call anyone, so please don't believe anyone who says he did.

Right now he's very busy in real life and is enjoying his time away; whether others know it or not, he gave up a lot of free time and many of the things he enjoys doing to be able to be here as much as he was. He's currently working on several writing projects that had been completely ignored for the better part of two years, a new position, and a happy return to the world of daylight and social activities.

Those of you who are close to him will know he wasn't feeling well shortly before he disappeared; he's doing much better, has new medication (and is taking it), and is on a much more reasonable schedule. He feels terrible guilt for leaving you all, and misses you terribly; his doctors and I have encouraged him to break character a bit and be selfish enough to take care of himself for a while. I appreciate all the supportive people who care about him here, and assure you all he is doing very well.

I can't say whether he will be back soon, a long time from now, or ever; that is a decision he has to make, and he simply doesn't know when will be the right time. Until then, he asks that I give all of you who are friends his love, and that you all continue with what he would tell you if he were here:

"All I ask is that every time you click "save page" you be sure that what you are saving will make Wikipedia and the world a better, happier, and more friendly place, and if it won't do that, don't click save." (paraphrased)

Until he sees you again,

"Grace, Light, and Peace be with you always."

Robbie31 (Essjay's Partner, for those who don't know) 00:15, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Aye. We'd rather have an Essjay that's feeling well than an Essjay who isn't. As my best friend often tells me, "unless you keep something for yourself, you don't have anything to give," so he shouldn't be feeling any guilt at all.

Make sure he gets better, and we'll hopefully see you around here again. Titoxd(?!?) 01:07, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Steiner Question

Dear Essjay, I am not normally very active on Wikipedia, but had started the Waldorf project when I was so tired of seeing others fight on the page - harming Wikipedia's reputation. I was growing increasingly frustrated with the Waldorf project and was quite happy that someone requested mediation for the page. To me it seemed a logical next step as the project could not proceed until both sides wanted an end to the edit wars.

I did sign up on the mediation list as I didn't wish to block the process and my name had been added. If I am obligated to contribute in some way, please let me know, but otherwise, I am happy to turn it over to mediator hands. Best wishes, Wonderactivist 01:33, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

If you know you will be happy with any consensus that might be reached, just let the mediator know, and they will understand. Armedblowfish (talk|mail) 02:04, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] user abuse

Some months ago, I had added to the article "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life" some information I considered relevant to the film's low box office numbers, specifically a comparrison to the film "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in which I and many others had seen an apparent remake of the first twenty minutes of "Raiders" into "Cradle". This was mearly trivial information which added to the scope of the artical.

However, someone who is known as "TheHandle" did not see it that way, erased what I had written, and left an abusive paragraph in the Discussion page. I had replaced the article, but he deleted it again, this time with statements in which he has refused to allow me to answer. Instead of doing what is required in the Discussion page, "TheHandle" decided to use foul language and behave in a very un-professional manner. Can something be done about it? Carajou 15:39, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

As is evident from the rest of the talk page, Essjay is currently absent from Wikipedia and your message is unlikely to be answered. Please try the methods listed on Wikipedia:Dispute resolution, or failing that, post this on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard. Cheers, Tangotango 15:50, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Problem with mediation request

Hi Essjay

There is a case of a missing Mediation request at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Jews for Jesus. Could you respond to this, or indicate to us someone else who can handle this? DJ Clayworth 21:31, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Essjay is currenty take an indefinate wikibreak and will not respond to this anytime soon. Please try posting your question at Wikipedia talk:Requests for mediation. Cbrown1023 22:10, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] why deleted?

Could you tell me why you deleted swiftcheetah.jpg?

I am using it for a project in which I only wish to use images from wikimedia so I can refer to the copyright information on the description pages in wikimedia commons itself.

Now it is gone I'm wondering whether you deleted it because you thought it was obsolete, or because it was a copyright infringment. If it was an infringment I will have to use another image. But maybe you deleted it for other reasons. When that is the case, is it possible to restore it, so I can refer to it's description page again?

Thanks in advance for your answer Ganaffe.

Ganaffe 10:17, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

As you can see from the rest of this talk page, Essjay has been absent from Wikipedia for a few months and is (probably) unable to reply. The logs from Wikimedia Commons for the image [2] show that it was deleted for being in the "Unknown" category, which means it was tagged as either having an unknown source, unknown copyright status or both. Judging from the current image description page on Wikibooks (b:Image:Swiftcheetah.jpg), it probably needs a source. If you can find the source, add one; if not, then it will not be able to survive on Wikimedia Commons. Cheers, Tangotango 14:24, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome back...

(I was going to put welcome back in here but I thought it would be too repetitive of the title of this post; but w/e, Welcome back!) As you may have noticed, your fellow users have been keeping your user page and user talk page tidy: respoding to inquiries, pointing questoining users in the right direction, and reverting vandalism. We have also archived the posts onto User:Essjay/Archives/43, User:Essjay/Archives/44, and User:Essjay/Archives/45. I suggest you review these. Thanks, Cbrown1023 02:28, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

I've seen the messages that are in the archives; I think most have been answered satisfactorily, and if not, can safely be classified as stale three months after my last edit. [edit] I hate to be the first one to bug you about something...

...but is there a chance Essjaybot II can go back to work on archiving WP:AN/I? Werdnabot does fine on AN but for some reason it just won't work on AN/I. Lately the board has been a bit slower so we might try 2 days instead of one, if its not too hard to reset. Also good to see you back. Thatcher131 04:22, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

I was just playing with code for Essjaybot II; it was killed in the move to the new toolserver. I think I've got it back up and running; ask if it's okay for it to archive there and if there is consensus to take it back, I'll set it up. I can't promise I'll be on to do it tomorrow, but I promise I will within a few days. Essjay (Talk) 04:24, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Frankly, I doubt if they know its been gone. I've done a lot of manual archiving. But I'll ask. Thatcher131 04:30, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Well, I'm just being cautious, I've been gone a very long time you know, and I don't want my first day back to get people riled up. Essjay (Talk) 04:44, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
I posted it to WT:AN. The only one likely to get riled up tonight is the ladybug. Thatcher131 04:51, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Please update that from here[3]. The RfA layout parsing has been fixed, is faster, and looks better. It also works in IE. I'd do it myself but I am still on an adminbreak (see RfP).Voice-of-All 08:26, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm, that's odd; I'll ask Misza13 (the programmer) to offer an opinion on why. Essjay (Talk) 17:18, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Odd indeed - this may have something to do with the large amount of code preceeding the first message. Ping my talk if it happens again, and I'll have a closer look. Misza13 17:26, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] EssjayBot III

(My welcome back is a bit above. ) On User:EssjayBot III it says it is a pywikipediabot – but I can't find any archiving scripts in my pywikipedia set (though it might be a bit outdated, but not older than your bots). Is it a custom script? Jon Harald Søby 17:12, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Indeed it is; Misza13 wrote it for me. If you'd like a copy, I'll be happy to provide the code for you. Essjay (Talk) 17:16, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] MediationBot

Hi Essjay, welcome back! I've looked through the files and it looks like the culprit is medconfig.php - change the following line:

//Absolute path to Python executable
define('PYTHONEXEC','/opt/python24/bin/python');

to:

//Absolute path to Python executable
define('PYTHONEXEC','/usr/bin/python');

and all the bots should resume working. Tell me how it goes. Cheers, Tangotango 09:45, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
