[edit] Official and Final Goodbye for a Month

This is my goodbye. I want all you buggers to wish me luck, so when I come back I better have a huge talk page with well wishers if you don't I'll bug you about it, until I make you leave wikipedia you get so annoyed with me. Its been fun, and its opened up my eyes to a lot, I mean, I've found Christianity, became an ex-fascist, I quit my old job, then got a new job. I've done a helluva lot in these few months then I've done in a lot of my life. Thank you all for helping me out. I'll be back in a month, and we'll have a chat and what not. Once I return I will be the best damn user ever, and I'll make everyone think that. So have fun without me, I'm getting my brother to keep an eye on you all, just so you know. Don't forget about me, I love you all (unless you don't give me a message of well wishing on my talk page, then I hate you). Bye bye everyone, remember when you vote on RfA's to vote in the name of everyone's favorite Private. Private Butcher 04:12, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Oh and just so you know if you want to secretly make me an admin while I'm gone, that's fine with me. Get a beauracrat to just sneak over and make me one, the people who do it'll probably get kicked off wikipedia, but eh, it would be worth it. Okay my last joke for a month, now I'm finally leaving, damn, its so hard. Private Butcher 04:17, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
I'm back everyone, reason on userpage. Private Butcher 22:56, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Why is that section even there?

Why is there a section for "On Wikibreak"??? Are they feeling really stressed? If so, they are probably already taking the appropriate steps to relieve it. This page should be restructured to feature "Mildly stressed users" (to include people that just need a little affirmation or encouragment), "Extremely stressed users" (to include people very frustrated with WP or real life; might need a short Wikibreak), and "On the verge of leaving Wikipedia forever users" (pretty self-explanatory; Very urgent). I would just go ahead and be bold, but I felt some discussion might be in order. --LV (Dark Mark) 19:35, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

I'd go for the boldness. It sounds okay to me. --HappyCamper 03:04, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
I like having the WikiBreak section, because I don't have to track down the reason why I haven't seen a particular user around in a while. For those of us who look for people to add to the alert list, it saves some work. Mamawrites 19:08, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, there was a page Wikipedia:Missing Wikipedians, but I'm not sure how often it is updated. Plus there is a category for people on wikibreak. I just don't think it is an Alert type thing. This page should be used to note users that are in danger of leaving Wikipedia, not those that are taking appropriate actions to cool their stress. We should listing people here that we need to help. Maybe the whole idea of this page has changed, or I missed the point from the beginning. --LV (Dark Mark) 14:44, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] ...also

How long should people be left on the alert page? WP moves pretty quickly. --LV (Dark Mark) 18:18, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

One month? We could delete their entries altogether or send them to the archives. --TantalumTelluride 21:29, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
I don't really know if we need archives for this page. What is the purpose? Good point, TT. --LV (Dark Mark) 14:55, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
I just removed 16 users from the lists. I didn't archive them, since I don't think archiving is worthwile for this page. --TantalumTelluride 21:24, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] deleting oneself

Should people be allowed to delete themselves from this page if the information about their status is in fact accurate? Voyager640 21:06, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Absolutely. (I say that as a former self-deleter.) If an individual wants to be left alone, then as a society that promotes positivity, we should respect thier desire. -- Essjay · Talk 21:29, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Recently returned section?

I don't know if this would be the right page for it, but does anyone think we should have a "Recently returned" section? This would allow Esperanza members to welcome back members who have returned from long absences or wikibreaks. (For example, User:Linuxbeak just returned from a month-long wikibreak.) Any comments/thoughts? EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 03:08, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Good idea. If you make it, people will fill it in :-) NoSeptember talk 03:27, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Fantastic! It is always nice to see people return, whether they were on wikibreak or thought to be lost all together. This will let everyone know they are back, and allow proper celebrations ensue! -- Natalya 05:30, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User:Adrian Buehlmann has quit...

User:Adrian Buehlmann has announced this on wikipedia.. This is really sad.... --hydkat 07:12, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

He left Wikipedia? I thought he only changed his user name. But if he did quit, then why is he still making edits? [1] Strange...--TBC??? ??? ??? 16:25, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] potential source of stressed out folks

I update admin activity levels periodically at Wikipedia:List of administrators. I suspect admins whose activity level drop are at least potentially stressed. The combination of the algorithm I use (30 edits or more within the last 3 months counts as active) and the (in)frequency with which I update the list (roughly monthly) probably makes this not very useful as a diagnostic, but the script I run to determine activity levels could be modified and run by anyone with a Linux or Mac more frequently (weekly?) to look for activity level drops. If anyone is interested in doing this, please let me know. -- Rick Block (talk) 15:50, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

They could also be busy IRL. Another useful indication of stress could be a big namespace shift; for instance, when an administrator who used to be somewhat active in vandal-related activities and the noticeboard develops a sudden interest in some remote corner of the wiki, it could be a sign he got tired of reading about petty disputes. --cesarb 18:37, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Think

I think there should be a section on the people who were stressed but not any more. General_Eisenhower (talkcontribsblocksprotectsdeletionsmoves)

For users who have returned from Wikibreak, there is already the "Recently Returned" section. For those who were just stressed, removal of their name from the list is usually notice enough, as it is not as big as taking a wikibreak. -- Natalya 00:53, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
I think stress and stay is more intense than wikibreak. --Deryck C. 16:43, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Archiving time?

How long will a name stay on the "recently returned" and "leaving wikipedia" lists? And does there exist an archive of wikibroke, left and returned users? --Deryck C. 16:44, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

From Essjay's first "Archive" post above, it looks like they were at one point archived, though the page does not exist anymore. I'd say if we do archive, "Leaving Wikipedia" users should stay around longer than those in "Recently Returned", since it's a bigger deal. Perhaps archive "Recently Returned" every two weeks (totally an arbitrary number, could be anything), and archive "Leaving Wikipedia" every month? -- Natalya 18:34, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
I'd say just delete the names. What would be the purpose of acrhives??? --LV (Dark Mark) 18:55, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
There is a list of missing users (not Esperanza operated) somewhere. Users who have left should probably be moved there if anyone remembers the link? Petros471 19:00, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
That'd be Wikipedia:Missing Wikipedians. Petros471 19:05, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
And, sadly, Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians. --LV (Dark Mark) 19:06, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Split up

I think it would be a good idea to distinguish between real life stress and wikistress, and breaks and departures for those reasons. The Advisory Council candidates mentioned stuff about trying to decrease the number of stressed users, but real life stress may be harder to avoid or help with. Jfingers88 03:16, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

What happens when stress is caused by a combination of real life and wikistress? Often things can escalate because something is stressful in real life, and then something goes sour here. I don't disagree that rearranging things would be a good idea, though. -- Natalya 11:30, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
I guess splitting would be a good idea. If someone suffers stress both in life and on wiki, he/she can simply be listed on both lists. Regardless of what caused the stress, a nice word from a friend is always welcome. --Tone 16:16, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The "Daniel Brandt" related issue that made a lot of users to leave

What happened anyway? Anonymous_anonymous_Have a Nice Day 20:09, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Basically damaging personal information was given, and at first the host of the forums in question did nothing about it (I think the posts have been deleted now, though). Cowman109Talk 22:21, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Yes, Brandt has posted the personal information (real names, DOBs, location) of some of the Wikipedia administrators, as well as the Wikipedians who he has felt has somehow betrayed him in some way. I'd rather not link to the site, thanks. --Pilot|guy (roger that) 23:05, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Yep. Better not to. If you think about it, he is doing this for privacy issues, so he may be the biggest WP:POINT violator ever on the wiki! fetofs Hello! 12:22, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Users who are not feeling well

I added this new section. Anonymous_anonymous_Have a Nice Day 11:52, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

The title (Alerts) clearly passes the message that this is about wikipedians who want (or need) support. Users who are ill normally don't need support, I think. fetofs Hello! 12:21, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Seems like a lot of people are leaving...

Is it just me, or does it seem as if a whole lot of people are present but stressed, or on a wikibreak because of stress, or leaving WP altogether? I know that I haven't been on Wikipedia long, and that I don't interact nearly as much as some (most?) of you, but there are still a hundred or two distinct usernames I'll recognize, and it feels as if a good 25% of them are either stressed or outright quitting.

I realise that real life circumstances can't be helped, but I'm still at a loss to explain this apparent trend...or how to deal with it. --Tachikoma 21:32, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

It really is unfortunate to see people continuing to leave all the time. It seems that just as one stressful event on Wikipedia clears up, another one starts. But, the best we can do it support people throughout the continuingly-stressful times here. Esperanza helps a lot of people to stay. As things get more stressful, we must step up our efforts to help users getting down on themselves cheer up. If it seems like something is escalating, and could turn nasty, it always helps to leave a nice note for a user who is getting bogged down by it all; if we can help people before they get so stressed out that they want to leave, we can help a lot of people not to leave at all.
By the by, the large number of wikibreaks may also be due to the fact that it is still the summer holiday for many users, with many of the breaks being for fun vacationy reasons. -- Natalya 23:04, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
Well, I'm under quite a bit and things only seem to be getting worse. I've noticed several editors, including one of the first I met here leave in the last week. And is it just me, or are admins getting a bit too trigger-happy with indefinite blocks? I've been seeing a lot of those recently, and many don't seem justified to me. I was close to quitting last night, but I don't think I'm going to. Ungovernable ForceThe Wiki Kitchen! 23:12, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't think so......

Think about it this way: the Wikipedian population just keeps growing every day. At the same time, a certain percentage of the Wikipedia population leaves because of personal problems.

Also, Esperanza is becoming more famous among the Wikipedian community as well. More become members and hang around in all of our programs. And as I said, since more people know about this organization, more people post their names.

You are correct about more and more people leaving nowadays. But don't look at the quantity of leaving Wikipedians in comparison to statistics a year ago or something like that. Instead, compare the ratio of leaving Wikipedians to the population. If you're good at math, try this:

Number of Wikipedians leaving : Wikipedian Population

OR

Number of Esperanzians leaving: Esperanza Population

These ratios shouldn't be changing that much over the years--Edtalk c E 23:28, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Also, we are having the nasty WP:SRNC which is causing a lot of strife...--Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 23:31, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Stress perhaps

I'm really worried about Tachikoma. On her user page she mentions "I seem to have a melancholy streak, however, which the Tachikomas lack." That isn't too bad, but I'm really concerned after a few innuendo comments which seem to be slight self-denegration. I need to go to bed now, but I will put up links tomorrow. —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  03:40, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dedicated Users Leaving

Hi I'm Mary Rutherford's niece. I noticed that my aunt's name is still on the wrong list. I removed it. Is it ok?

I assume you're referring to User:Anonymous anonymous? We'll take your word for it. - Che Nuevara 18:55, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
