[edit] Discussion
Discussion requested by Dev. I see no problem with the Newsletter, since it is important to know what is going on here at Esperanza.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 18:46, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- You have a front page, and any active Esperanxan would surely check it? Are you aware that receiving the newsletter is compulsory for EA members? I would suggest it takes up far too much of the council's time to be posting newsletters when members who would actually read it would get their news from the front page anyway, time better spent editing articles. - The Council only makes one newsletter. Sending it out to hte 700+ members are done by bot. Plus, not all members are that much active in our community.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 19:02, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- I personally enjoy getting the newsletter, even though I know what going on :) Also, isn't a newsletter pretty common for WikiProjects. For instance, I think The military history project sends one out, don't they? Anyway, I'm for keeping it. Thε Halo Θ 19:05, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, they do, but, as was brought up on the MfD, MilHist contribute a lot more to Wikipedia. Esperanza's one just announces what Esperanza has been doing, and any active member would know that, and an inactive one is hardly going to read the newsletter, is it? I'm more concerned about the fact that receiving a newsletter is compulsory. Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 19:15, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- To be fair, the new Esperanza would also contribute a lot to the Encyclopedia, so I think it will be as useful as the Military History one. Also we've got the Opt Out List for anyone that doesn't want it. And, if there is no longer a members list, I think that people would sign up to the newsletter only if they wanted it, so I don't see any problem with the Newsletter right now. Thε Halo Θ 19:20, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Perhaps we could widen the scope of the newsletter, telling the community about ongoings throughout Wikipedia.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 19:21, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- If you wanted to do that, you could simply send planned articles to the Signpost. I think this discussion is largely hinging on the survival of the membership list at the moment, so I would advocate waiting until a decision is made with that. - I like the idea of a newsletter. It helps keep people updated, and it can easily be sent around by a bot. Sure, people who participate reguarly would learn the news from the front page, but it is still useful to have; and it might bring back those who have been busy for a few weeks - • The Giant Puffin • 20:51, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Opting out of the mailing list
I would suggest there be a way to opt out of the newsletter. When I was in Esperanza it was a minor annoyance to me that I couldn't get off the list. I already check WP:EA enough often anyway, and I didn't need it spilling out onto my userpage. But I was told that to be a member of Esperanza I had to put my name on the members list, and by being on the members list, I automatically got this newsletter. As a bot programmer myself, I think it wouldn't be hard to make an opt-out list to filter the members list on before sending out the newsletter. --Cyde Weys 01:03, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- There is an opt out option Cyde. I can't tell you what it is, but I am fairly sure there is. DoomsDay349 01:20, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- Emm...Opt Out List. There was a discussion relating to this above. Thε Halo Θ 01:18, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
There should be an opt-in list as well. So that non members can receive it if they so wish. YDAM TALK 12:27, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Keep
- Keep, useful and informative. No harm in keeping it. I hope in our overhaul, we don't get carried away and start an indiscriminate scourge of anything in which we find minor problems; I mean nothing's perfect. --May the Force be with you! Shreshth91 13:02, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- Strong Keep Per above. No reason not to keep. I, and many other enjoy the newsletter, and I find that it can be helpful. Thε Halo Θ 13:08, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- Strong keep. I agree totally with the above: I enjoy getting the newsletter, and I help write the thing. It's always good to have reminders of what you're striving towards on Wikipedia. Regards, —Celestianpower háblame 14:08, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- Keep. It's not as if it's such an amazingly hard project that it draws time away from the encyclopedia, or at least not that much. (and Halo and CP, read this, please.) DoomsDay349 17:59, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- Keep as per above discussion/comments. – Heaven's Wrath Talk 19:23, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- Keep - other WikiProjects have newsletters. It's a nice idea. It does sound like you should check on the activity of your membership, though, rather than consistantly spamming those who are inactive : ) - jc37 00:39, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- Keep- I liked the newsletter--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 00:58, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- Keep, but with a more or less prominent link to an opt-out list. Marialadouce | parlami 13:31, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
