[edit] Barnstar Brigade
[edit] Issues
Esperanzians actively seek out users and award them barnstars they do not truly deserve, thus diminishing the value of a barnstar.

- User Page Award discussion closed. Discuss here.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 05:28, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
All suggestions coming to mind seem to involve time/scrutiny added to the process. Right now 3 come to mind:
- Require at least one other person to sign off on it. Possibly like that "running question" game, wherein one person answered another's question, only in this manner, a user would post their suggestion somewhere, another person would read their rationale, hopefully check it out to ensure its legit, and then they'd post it to the userpage with both their comments and signatures. This would ensure that barnstars from EA are more from EA then from an individual person.
- Alternately, do it on IRC, or through other, more informal channels, just so long as at least one other person gives it genuine thought.
- Synchronize it with, say, the WP:SP to have it run on a weekly basis. People can report anything they think worthy during the week, they can be discussed at large, the subject(s) asked relevant questions if somethings not clear, and then if there's a clear approval they can be added on at the end of the week.
Either case may not decrease the number of awards given out (It may increase them), but if they succeed in creating and showing that the EA awards (At least) are more systematic then a single user on an immediate decision, they'll prevent a depreciation in value of them. I'd also suggest turning up someone familiar with award systems in life, there has to have been a system of impartial, stable, and reasonably non-acrimonious determination of merit in use some where, we could plagairize that... 68.39.174.238 07:00, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
If this is deleted (which seems likely), we should somehow carry on the idea that recognizing unrecognized contributions is a good thing to do. -- Natalya 14:04, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

- Yes, it was MFD. Perhaps we can say something under the "goals of Esperanza" that a good way to spread community is to recognize unrecognized contributions. DoomsDay349 16:18, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- I believe there's a page somewhere here on Esperanza that says "Things an Esperanzian could do". We can still add the barnstar idea to that list.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 16:52, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

- Strong and speedy delete. If people want to give barnstars to editors who are worthy of receiving them, then they should do so. There is no point in making it into a sort of competition, where (per above) "Esperanzians actively seek out users and award them barnstars they do not truly deserve, thus diminishing the value of a barnstar." --May the Force be with you! - "Barnstars are evil" I'm curious, why do you have four on your userpage then. YDAM TALK 13:08, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- It is okay to showcase them, but things like the Barnstar Brigade damage their value and distract people from the encyclopedia. Michaelas10 (Talk) 16:57, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Delete We should recognise and reward good contributions to wikipedia but I'm not sure this is the way to go about it, it sort of cheapens the award, that and it's polarising parts of the community against esperanza. YDAM TALK 13:08, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Delete per the concerns above. I'd like to have something in Esperanza that does continue to recognize the good contributions of editors however. Thε Halo Θ 16:15, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Comment-it was deleted per the MFD. This discussion is closed. DoomsDay349 16:19, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Comment - it wasn't deleted. The MfD was speedy closed by EL_C. Thε Halo Θ 16:24, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Comment Oh. Why wasn't this deleted then? Not enough support? How do we reopen? DoomsDay349 16:31, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- It was probably closed because there was a consensus on the UPA MfD that said we should have some time to sort out our reforms before a mass of MfDs. I think that if we get enough supports for deleting it, we can just delete it without having to go through the MfD process. I see no harm in that. Thε Halo Θ 16:36, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
