Talk:ESDU

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The "History" section of this article was copied verbatim from http://www.ihsesdu.com/ → "About us" → "Corporate Profile". Sorry, ihsesdu.com apparently wants to make it difficult to link directly to that page. —Fleminra 05:42, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] History of ESDU

The History section of ESDU has now been rewritten. Hopefully it does not now violate any of the rules. Browny 13:21, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Page Name

Per wP:NAME#Prefer spelled-out phrases to acronyms, the proper title of the page is Engineering Sciences Data Unit, not EDSU. Looking over their amterials, the abbreviation is typically spelled out prominently. I do not think the acronym therefore qualifies as exclusive use. --Eyrian 17:58, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Page Name

ESDU was once known as 'The Engineering Sciences Data Unit' but changed its name on the 80s. In the same way BAE Systems changed their name from British Aerospace yet they are listed under their new name. In all the time I have used the ESDU products I have never known anyone call them the Engineering Sciences Data Unit. ESDU no longer use the old name on their website www.ihsesdu.com

OK, then it makes sense, but then it needs at least a paragraph in the history, and the original meaning. I have added some of that data, I hope someone with more knowledge about ESDU will add the rest.
There may be other reasones than 'I only know ESDU as ESDU' to keep a page at a non-abbreviated site, namely that there are other organisations using the same abbreviation (the ESDU-page should then be the disambiguation page). I have done a short survey on internet, and that seems not to be the case here, there are some organisations that use ESDU, but the great majority of hits were to the ESDU described on this page. I hope this settles things, cheers and happy editing! --Dirk Beetstra T C 13:33, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
