Eschede is a village and a municipality in the district of Celle, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Eschede is situated approx. 15 km northeast of Celle. It is situated at the border of the "Naturpark Suedheide" a beautiful protected environment of great forests and creeks. Today ca. 20 small villages are united to the "Samtgemeinde Eschede".In 1975 a big fire destroyed large forest areas. It is known for the 1998 Eschede train disaster, in which an ICE train crashed. In Eschede in 1881 the Painter Albert Koenig (1881-1944) was born, his "Albert-Koenig-Museum" can be visited in Unterluess near Eschede.
Eschede is also the seat of the Samtgemeinde ("collective municipality") Eschede, which consists of the following municipalities:
