It's a wonderful book. It was the prescribed text in my Elec Eng course for some second year applied maths subjects. The green covered fourth (?) edition. I still have it and dip into it now and then. He deserves a much bigger entry. unlikely_ending 03:02, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

He definitely did NOT complete his PhD in 1979. I own a copy of the 4th edition of his tome "Advanced Engineering Mathematics", dates of all four releases stated in that edition are:

 1962, 1967, 1972, 1979

It was already a well-regarded text then.

I've not found anything substantive on the Web about him, nothing at Ohio State, nothing personal at Wiley. One obscure reference in an Austrian mathematical society newsletter in German insinuating he'd been at the T.U. Graz in the late '50s, early 60s, at which time he probably already had his doctorate. That makes him pretty old in releasing his 9th edition for Wiley just this past January, but I don't have more to go on. Maybe a kindly email to Wiley would get some more accurate clarification.
