Ernst Bernhard of Saxe-Meiningen

Ernst Bernhard Victor Georg of Saxe-Meiningen (b. Meiningen, 27 September 1859 - d. Schloß Altenstein, 29 December 1941), was a german prince of the ducal house of Saxe-Meiningen.

He was the eldest son of Georg II, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen and his secnd wife Feodora of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.

He married in Munich on 20 September 1892 with Katharina Jensen, who was created Freifrau von Saalfeld the same day of the wedding. This marriage was unequal and Ernst had to renounce his succession rights to the duchy of Saxe-Meiningen for himself and his descendants.

Ernst and Katharina had six children, all received the title of Freiherr/Freiherrin von Saalfeld:

  1. Georg Wilhelm (b. Florence, 11 June 1893 - killed in action, La Bassée, France, 29 April 1916).
  2. Elisabeth Helene Adelheid Marie (b. Florence, 2 February 1895 - d. Giessen, 4 June 1934), married on 25 April 1917 to Johann Duken.
  3. Ernst Frederick Heinrich Paul (b. Florence, 4 July 1896 - killed in action, Josefovo, near Kielmy, Lithuania, 28 May 1915).
  4. Ralf Erich (b. Frankfurt, 28 March 1900 - d. Weilheim, 22 July 1947), married firstly in 11 October 1928 to Marie Seitz and secondly in 16 August 1936 to Melanie of Bismarck. His descendants still alive on his six children, born in both marriages.
  5. Sven Hans (b. Munich, 18 September 1903 - d. Munich, 13 December 1998), married on 20 March 1936 to Elisabeth Faust, but they divorced in 1952. His descendants still alive on his five children.
  6. Heinrich (ENZIO) Woldemar Carl (b. Munich, 7 July 1908 - killed in action when he piloted over England, 31 March 1941), married on 28 February 1936 to Rut Viererbe. His descendants still alive on his four children, the last of they born postoumouly.
