Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport (IATA: BAQ, ICAO: SKBQ) is located in Barranquilla, Colombia and owes its name to one of the pioneers of Colombian aviation, Ernesto Cortissoz. The airport is located in the municipality of Soledad, about 7 km south of the city of Barranquilla. It is one of the few airports in Colombia capable of accepting widebodied aircraft such as the Boeing 747, McDonnell Douglas DC-10, and Lockheed L-1011.
The airport's proximity to major tourist attractions, as well as good weather, should enable it to be named as one of Colombia's major regional hubs. Unfortunately, due to political and economic circumstances in Colombia, this is not the case. The airport is instead forced to run under capacity with limited service to domestic airports and few international destinations.
This airport works as the international HUB for Aires Colombia, and as a second Hub for Avianca during the high season.
