Ernest Ka'ai

Ernest Ka'ai (1881-1961) was an ukulele virtuoso responsible for making the ukulele an indispensable instrument in the typical Hawaiian ensemble. In 1916 he published "The Ukulele A Hawaiian Guitar And How To Play It", the first serious text on the ukulele, its techniques, and its music.

My name is Sam Rappa and I was a guitar student of Ernest Ka'ai in 1943 in Miami Florida. He opened a studio on Tamiami Trail and hired me to teach beginners for him, which I did for about 2 years. I was 17 at the time. Mr. Ka'ai was very good to me and gave me guidance. He would send me out with another Hawiian gentleman to perform hawaii songs at different events. I made the decision that playing guitar would be my profession, and so it is. This entry is in 2006.
