Ergon is a corporation owned by the Government of Queensland. It supplies electricity to Queenslanders outside the metropolitan southeast through a distribution network and retail activities.

In 2006 the Queensland Government announced plans to privatise part of the business, with the sale of approximately 50 000 contestable electricity customers and retailer trading activities to the private sector. Smaller electricity customers will continue to be billed by Ergon Energy and the electricity distribution network will remain in public ownership.
