Ergine, also known as d-lysergic acid amide, LSA, and LA-111, is an alkaloid of the ergoline family that occurs in various species of vines of the Convolvulaceae and some species of fungi. As the dominant alkaloid in the hallucinogenic seeds of Rivea corymbosa (ololiuhqui), Argyreia nervosa (Hawaiian baby woodrose) and Ipomoea violacea (tlitliltzin), it is often stated that ergine and/or isoergine (its epimer) is responsible for the psychedelic activity. In fact, the effects of synthetic ergine and isoergine are not particularly psychedelic, see Mixing the Kykeon below for a summary of human trials, and Chapter 17 and entry #26 of TiHKAL for further discussion. Whether or not these compounds account for the hallucinogenic effects of the seeds remains unclear. Ergine is a DEA schedule III drug in the United States.

[edit] Effects
The effects are similar to that of LSD with less visuals. If any visuals are reported they are weak open eye visuals or some strong close eye visuals. The emotional effects of LSD are also present although less intense. LSA usually causes the user to go into deep philosophical thinking, in the same vein as LSD. There are also reports of LSD-like auditory hallucinations. The trip can last anywhere from 4 to 12 hours with effects lasting over into the next day. Usually these next day effects are some visual distortion and feelings of happiness and well-being. The most common side effects reported are nausea and some trouble sleeping after the end of the trip.
[edit] Isolation
Ergine can be extracted from morning glory seeds or Hawaiian baby woodrose seeds with water under acidic conditions.
